Today I thought I'd do a little tribute post to one of the weirdest, yet most amazing movies of all time: Welcome to the Dollhouse. This movie came out in 1995 when I was 13 years old, and my sister and I absolutely adored it- we probably watched it 100 times on our old VHS player. It's totally strange (it's a black comedy so keep that in mind), but totally wonderful, fabulous, spectacular, you name it. The film's plot centers around the life and times of a young girl named Dawn Weiner, and the movie follows her as she navigates her way through her often tumultuous 7th-grade life, full of crushes, disappointments, and lots of teasing. No one realizes how freakin' awesome this girl is- HELLOOO, if I was there with Dawn we'd so be bff. Love her.
Here's the trailer- and be sure to check out Dawn's outfits. Those tops, those glasses, the hair baubles?! My spring time wardrobe is totally going to be inspired by this little middle-schooler.
Have you ever seen this movie? What did you think? If you haven't seen it yet, I definitely recommend it if you're in the mood for a quirky little film. Enjoy!
Oh, I'd forgotten all about this! I was working in a video shop when this came out and hardly anybody rented it. Fools. Great film!

ReplyDeleteReminds me a little of Napoleon Dynamite..going to have to add it to the Netflix queue!
ReplyDeleteI had a totally bizarre professor for my teacher credentialing program, and he showed us this movie. I can't remember at all what the connection was to what we were learning, but I will never forget Dawn. Good film!
ReplyDeleteI love this movie! But there's always a little twinge of pain in it since I was totally like Dawn in elementary and probably most of middle school if I can recall correctly.
ReplyDeleteThis movie brings back some memories!!!
ReplyDeleteLove you mamacita!
I have to say I've never seen this movie, but it's on my list now! I love weird indie type films. :) My husband rolls his eyes when I pick one out for movie night, but I'm always pleased at my choices.

ReplyDeletelove that movie! i used to have a crush on the rapist boy-haha weird. remember that movie we used to rent about the lady who was eating fried chicken and it ended up being a rat, or the lady who microwaved her cat...wasn't it called The Willies?
ReplyDeleteThe boy says meet me behind the dumpster. I'm gonna rape you & she goes... I loved this movie!!! No one ever knows about this movie..<3 Cant believe you posted about it!!
ReplyDeletei may or may not have just snorted mid belly laugh thinking about the first time i saw this movie...when you're young you don't fully understand the humor of it right away...at first i wondered why my weirdo friend was making me watch this twisted film at her house for a sleepover...but then...i was super in to it. thanks danielle...you just made me add it to the queue.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteI love this movie! I always thought this movie must have influenced Napoleon Dynamite.
ReplyDeleteohh man i love this movie i haven't watched it in forever i need to go buy it and add to my collection great post!
ReplyDeleteI saw this movie when I was 12 (14 years ago, holy crap!), and I STILL quote it! In fact, just yesterday I jokingly said, "You think you're hot shit, but you're really just cold diarrhea" like Ralphie says to those punks in the arcade. :) So gross & awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou're right that it is totally weird, but it's so great. Even though my adolescence wasn't nearly as tortured or painful (or even awkward) as Dawn's, I could relate to her in some weird way. You just totally feel for that girl, right? And the clothes - priceless!
I love her brother & his stupid band. Hahaha.
I am putting this movie at the top of my Netflix queue now. It's been way too long since I watched it!
I remember watching this movie when i moved to the us. I was so confused and was sadden by how people treated her.
ReplyDeleteI used to say "Give her a chance she rules!!"
