5 quick ways to make our blog world a more positive place

balloons

It's no secret that I love blogging. And if you're here reading this, you probably do too! There's all sorts of people in our little/big community here: writers, readers, those who comment, those who don't, passer-by, regular guests. We all play our little roles to make up this larger tapestry often referred to as the blogosphere, our wonderful virtual world full of creativity and buzzing with connections. Most of the time it's a very positive place, but sometimes it isn't. Just recently I saw a slew of nasty comments pop up on a friend's blog and as usual, I was appalled. Why do people find the need to be so hurtful while hiding behind a computer screen? Rhetorical question for sure because I don't think anyone but the commenter ever knows. But it got me thinking...what can we do, now, to make our blog world a happier, more positive place? For one, absolutely ignore those negative nellies. They unfortunately do play a role here, but we don't need to acknowledge them. Instead, let's do things that build this community, foster connections, and encourage creativity. Sound good? Below are five quick things you can do now to keep this world turning in a positive direction, or at least in our little corner. I did all of these things this week, and it was not only fun to reach out, but I made a handful of new friends in the process. So awesome.

1. Take 20 minutes and click on 5 random blogs you otherwise wouldn't have visited. You can do this by checking out familiar blog's daily reads (mine will be updated this week!), profiles, or if you really want to get crazy you can use the "explore" option in Google Reader. Check them out, read through a few entries, and if you're intrigued, click the follow button. At the least, be sure to leave a comment saying hello and that you're just stopping by and share how you found them.

2. Really read. And really comment. It's hard to read through the hundreds of blogs many of us subscribe to, but if you find the time, really take in an entry or two, think about it, and leave some thoughts in the comment box. It's so fun to read comments that really tell me something and respond. And there's no greater feeling than hearing "me too" or "I love this, etc." with some details after you've put a little piece of yourself out into the world.

3. Reach out. Write an email to your favorite blogger or a new blog you recently discovered. I read a huge array of blogs, and I don't always reach out and say hello.  Yes, I am one of those readers who takes in every word but doesn't always comment! It's something I'm definitely working on, because I know how much every single one of the comments here warms my heart. But even better is just writing a quick email that lets someone know how much you enjoy what they're creating. I finally reached out to one of my favorite blogs this week, and she responded and told me that she was actually thinking of stopping because she thought no one read it! Ahh! I would have been so sad, and it only made me think more about how great it is to actually reach out.

4. Share the love! I started doing a blog spotlight feature here because I feel like there's nothing better than supporting other people in their creative endeavors. It's so fun to pick a blog from your daily reads and share them with the world, and it's something everyone can do. I love discovering new sites, and a spotlight or links feature is always a great way to give exposure to others that you feel are just awesome!

5. Finally, try something new to keep YOUR creative self moving and grooving! Perhaps do one of the popular "photo an hour" posts, a "what's in my bag" post, or a random facts share session. Video blog, interview someone, reach out and create a feature series with a friend! When you feel inspired, you inspire others, and what better way to beautify the world around you than by starting with yourself!

Good luck and happy positive-blogging! xoxo

  2. love this post. I read blogs literally, all day. ha! i am constantly inspire by other girls around the country -- or world -- by their blog content, and i always try to leave meaningful comments. its so odd to check my blog stats and see my numbers jumping, but little to no comments. the little feedback i get is so uplifting, and i always try to give that to others!

  3. Thanks for the tips! This is really great.

  4. This was really awesome. I do too much skimming and not enough commenting. I rarely ever get comments on my blog and I get so excited to know that someone out there enjoys my writing. This week I'll work on spreading the blogger love. I actually did my first blog spotlight too!

  8. Great post on an already wonderful blog. These are also things we should apply to real life as well.

Thanks for taking the time to brighten my day when I visit your blog

  9. Brilliant post! I love your blog and have read it for a long long time but don't usually comment much as I am also guilty of reading then leaving. But from now on I'll try if I have something to say or enjoyed a post! X

  10. Well said Danielle, I'm one of those that reads daily (your blog) and never comments, not sure why...I have the time. I've also questioned my blogging from time to time, why I do it, what is the point etcetc. I've come to the conclusion that not only does it make me happy to put effort into my blog but family members & friends that don't live close by can keep in touch with our daily lives, I also LOVE reading my daily reads & feeling a little less lonely some days. I'm struggling getting a few more followers lately, however today I picked up 1 more & she left a comment that made my day! I'm going to do your 5 quick ways now & if anyone feels like stopping by my blog on their travels please do! www.hannafrancesca.blogspot.com

  11. love this post! i'm so guilty of never participating #3 and #4. I'm a creeper who just loves to read blogs but I rarely comment. I also forget sometimes my blog is an outreach to hundreds of others I can introduce friends to. I think that has a lot to do with Twitter, I'm happy in my small circle, but it's not enough!

I think with #2, that's my biggest pet peeve. I learned that early in blogging when a fashion blogger (who ended up deleting her blog) a few years ago posted an outfit on a black dress she was wearing for her mother's funeral. All but one of the comments mentioned a sorrowful comfort but most were "Love the dress!" etc. Taking it in and reading is a must and half the time, answers lots of questions the reader may have.

  12. Well said - I'm going to make an honest effort towards #5. As much as I love reading "what's in my bag" and "a photo an hour" I should try to put my own out there.

  13. I recently started the whole blog thing. I think for me it's more therapeutic than anything. I don't have followers though, lol. So I am sure negativity will come in due time. When it does I'll remember your positive words though ;). OH and I think I found you randomly from a blog I read that followed your blog. Maybe Bleubird, and I found Bleubird from Casey's Elegant Musings.

  14. What a co- incidence! Last week I resolved to do those.exact.5 things! And I've had so much fun and got so much inspiration from doing it!

I've decided to expand my blogging to include a feature on my favourite thrift store finds, and one on cooking off-grid ( since I live on a boat without fancy electrical gadgets.)

I can't wait to get started, so thanks for the encouragement!

    Lots of blog love

  15. Love this post, I am actually going to do this. I absorb blogs everyday, some I just, others I skim, while others I just find a deep connection to but never comment(Too shy), and there are the ones I just love to comment on. I love the blogging world, it makes me appreciate people so much more and even fall for some that I would have never thought I had anything in common with. I plan on being more supportive and giving more love to bloggers.

    ReplyDelete
  16. i love this. i'm not a huge comment writer, but i thought i needed to give you a thumbs up here. i just started to try my hand at lifestyle blogging last week and i think it's very fun, so far! yourself and miss james @ bleubird were my main inspiration. you both keep such a positive attitude and really share your popularity to help others in the most amazing way. i love this. trolls be gone! we need to be more supportive of each other on the internet and not use it's cloak of anonymity for bashing and whining.

    keep up the amazing work!

    ReplyDelete
  17. This was beyond refreshing to read, and I couldn't agree more with your tips to make this blogger world a happier place!

    ReplyDelete
  18. you have an amazing attitude to life, and are such a positive inspiration to others. i recently started blogging firstly for myself as diary/scrapbook of things happening in my life, but the fact that other people are reading it, enjoying it and commenting is just the cherry on the top!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great post, I love the idea of emailing a favourite blogger although I never have done before as I still get "shy" online!
I'm definitely going to try your tip of visiting 5 random blogs this week. x

    ReplyDelete
  20. i love this! i think that most bloggers are pretty positive, but it is so sad when people feel the need to leave a negative comment (i had one once and it ruined my day, then i found out how to delete it!).

on another note, i did nearly email you last night, and then wussed out because i thought you may think it was strange! in a nutshell i wanted to thank you for your '10 things i learnt in my 20s' posts, they are filling me with optimism and positivity during a trickier portion of my 20s!

  21. Love the tips!

I'm trying to comment more on blogs but always seem to get scared, haha.

  22. i love this, danielle!
you have such a positive, kind spirit.
and when you do blog posts like this it really shines through.
    it's contagious!

    xo.

  23. Great list of ideas! I was reading a blog the other day that I regularly read but hardly ever comment on. Then I saw a nasty anonymous commenter had left a negative comment and it compelled me to comment too. I had to let anon know that it was not nice to leave these sorts of negative comments on peoples blogs and also let the blogger know that people were out there that supported her in a positive way.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a lovely post! I try to remember to post more comments, and reply to comments on my posts. It creates a nice friendly feeling, rather than just lurking around! I like the idea of featuring blogs, I should do something like that soon~

    ReplyDelete
  25. thank you so much for speaking this out, we really should appreciate and support each other more. I even thought about the commenting-thing myself today, I love and read each single comment but hardly give feedback myself... I'll change that, I promise!

  26. lovely blog and post.I think more people should take your advice. i only started blogging 3 weeks ago and already ive come up against some negitivity :/
lots of positive or constructive feedback too but i guess im dwelling on the negitive too much...
    beautiful post
    love your blog

  27. I just started blogging a month ago and have found it to be such a powerful form or creative release. Not only do I get to put my random thoughts and feelings out there, but I get to read other people's free flowing ramblings as well. It's sometimes hard to put yourself out there as far as comments, so thank you for the positive encouragement. I really enjoy your blog and your energy. You have a very inspiring spirit. Thanks for the comraderie!!

  28. Love your tips, I'm definitely guilty of not commenting because I think I have nothing to add, but you're right, it is lovely just to hear lots of "Me too"s. I am 5 months pregnant and your posts make me even more optimistic about being a mum.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i've been reading blogs for years without ever commenting once! i'm a total lurker, but just recently started commenting on blogs when someone randomly commented on mine. i never thought anyone would read my blog, much less comment, and it was nice to 'hear' something nice. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love love coming here and reading your posts they always make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. I don't think i will stop blogging because I know friends and family read it on occasion and I hope to become more involved in the blogging world. I actually did advice #3 and reached out to a fellow blogger and I am so glad I did. It was such a random e-mail to a blogger who I love to read on the daily and it turns out that in this small world we actually had mutual friends in common. It's crazy what you can learn if you take the time to reach out!

    ReplyDelete
  31. since finding your blog, one of the highlights of my days is reading your entries! You are an inspiring lady and it's a treat to read your words. Thank you for this post, it's a beautiful message and I look forward to putting your tips into action :). Have a great day!

  34. Such a constructive post. I love getting emails from my readers...it's like a good comment x 10.

And every time you do a mama said, I go visit the new blogs because I need mama advice like whoa for this little baby :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. These are such great thoughts! I love getting comments, too, and I love clicking through to find new blogs :) I'm going to let your positivity inspire me to leave more comments today. Happy weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  36. See, I totally agree with you on this! I try to do it myself. Recently started to reach out to my favourite bloggers and let them know my thoughts. It's cool to help foster a sense of the positive!

I enjoy your blog and that you are a tattooed mama like me.

    Very cool :)

  37. Great advice! I have recently been trying to be a little more creative in my blogging and I like your tips. I have always liked to email bloggers to tell them that I love their blogs. I am sure that they appreciate it even when they have over 2000 followers already! ;)
Blogs have become my 'magazines'...in fact, I hardly ever buy a magazine these days because blogs give me everything I need.

  41. i love this post. these are some great ideas for spreading positiveness in our blog world. it makes me happy!

    ReplyDelete
  42. These are great ideas for a fairly blogger like myself. I'm pretty good about commenting, but blog spotlights as well as the ideas in #5 are something to think about. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for this post Danielle! I'm relatively new to the blogging world (as a writer... I've been reading blogs for years now) and on of the biggest hurdles I've had in jumping in to the blogosphere is in connecting with people, because, quite honestly I tend to forget that the authors behind the blogs I love so much are just real people! In the past I've refrained from commenting not because I didn't take in the post or feel it was worth a real genuine response, but because I felt almost starstruck and didn't think anything I could comment would be important enough or add enough value to the author to be worth reading.

Now that I'm blogging myself I realize just how welcome, genuine, thoughtful comments are!!

This post is an excellent reminder that we are all part of a community and a crucial part of all communities is interaction and participation!

    ReplyDelete
  44. This post is so great! I'm one of those avid blog readers who rarely comments (though I've been working on that lately). I just have so many blogs that I love and it takes a lot of time to really read them. Here I am though, commenting! So I must be getting better I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  45. such good tips, i love all of them. it's important to keep yourself motivated for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Those are all great suggestions! I'm definitely a person who reads everything, but rarely comments. I'm working on being better about that!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi i've been following you for awhile and this post inspired me to get out of my hiding and comment! You really are an incredible writer and I love your blog! Here's my little space on the net though it's not much yet. http://deareillie.blogspot.com

Have a great weekend danielle! :)

  48. Ack! Now I REALLY wish we lived closer to each other. You are just brilliantly beautiful inside and out! Thanks for the inspiring post as usual! xox

  49. This Is such a awesome post!! It really made me smile..I'm a new blogger and its been so hard coming out of my shell and really writing and opening myself up..And even harder because its hard to get noticed in the huge community of bloggers and get me people to notice it or get advice on how to or whats the best way to kick start it..But I will also take the advice as well! Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  50. These are such great suggestions, I feel the blogging community is a stronger one than it's given credit for. I definitely think it could get even stronger through these ideas!

    xo

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you so much for this post! It's so true, and I'm going to make an attempt at all 5.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So, now I think it's my turn to reach out :)! I love your thoughts and I try to turn them into reality day by day. Desperately there's not always enough time... But it's better to comment on a few blogs each day than remain completely silent!

    ReplyDelete
  53. These are great! I hope that people really work one or 2 of these into their daily reading...

    Here's another suggestion:
Look at your stats for blogs sending traffic your way. If you see any that aren't friends of yours or you're not paying for sponsoring, head on over there to say hi!
Feeling invisible in the huge blogosphere is a big discouragement for people, I think.... Help them know they are not invisible!

  55. This is such an inspiring and uplifting post, Danielle! I really appreciate you posting this because it's so easy for young and kickstarting bloggers to feel discouraged, uninspired and invisible in such vast community. Reaching out and making the effort to connect really does make a difference. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love this, thanks for the great post. I've been reading blogs for a few years and have just started my own. Blogging is a conversation and I want to be a positive contributor, both as a blogger and a commenter. Your suggestions are awesome and I'm excited about implementing a spotlight as well as a feature on my blog sometime soon!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love you for posting this! I am one of those bloggers who also reads a lot and doesn't comment as much! I must change this up soon. I am also thankful I haven't gotten any nasty comments yet...I'm not sure how I will handle that when I do but hopefully there will be none!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Danielle-you bring so much light in my life, you are positive and upbeat without being fake and are such a thoughtful caring person. I am lucky to call you my friend. Xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  59. You are by far my favorite blog to read - I don't understand how anyone could even find something negative to say to you :( I dont think it's just limited to comments either... I've seen a handful of downright nasty judgmental finger-pointing posts on some of my favorite blogs that just blow my mind...especially in the mommy blog community...I want to write about a couple big topics but am almost scared because of how passionately mean people can be about personal decisions like that...

    ReplyDelete
  60. this post it such a good idea, the bullying there is on online sites really does need to be addressed.
i think you're right about ignoring those people who are nasty to others and focusing on building a happy blogging community :) x

    i agree with all 5 things..esp. #2.
    thanks for writing this post.

  62. This is absolutely wonderful. I've dealt with negative comment-trolls on and off in the past and I know how hurtful it can be. I love your ideas/suggestions for building a positive community. The last several weeks I've been trying to work on making an effort to comment more, and I'm finding out it's a great way to meet new people :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Preach girl! I especially love the part about really reading and commenting. Sometimes I am confused by the comments I get because they didn't read. It can get frustrating to pour my heart and creativity into a post only to feel like it's not being read.

  73. I truly enjoyed reading this post!
I love discovering new blogs! & I love leaving comments because I know how wonderful it is to get them.

as for the negative nellies(in life or blogs)... I agree, don't give 'em the time of day.

  74. "build this community, foster connections, and encourage creativity"

So true. I think I know which negative comments you're referring too - I saw them too and was appalled. I love that you're turning this into a wonderful learning experience! This is such a great reminder to help make our blogosphere a nurturing, creative place!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I absolutely love this post! I too read a bunch of blogs but don't always comment because I don't always have the time, but I'm definitely wanting to change that.
Thanks so much for writing this, I think it's absolutely brilliant and great advice! xx

  78. This made me smile when I read it :)...I'm new to the blogging world and so far it's such a positive place. I can't wait to meet new people in this "blogosphere". I will definitely take these tips and use them. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Great post Danielle! Since I'm new to blogging, I'm making a big effort to reach out to other bloggers and discovering new blogs every day. And I know just how nice it is to get a comment from a random person on your blog, it makes my day!

    ReplyDelete
  80. First of all, I could hug you for this post - I too an am optimistic blogger (and constantly abuse exclamation points!!! ha!) I seem to have the opposite problem, though, I comment all over the place, actually I try to limit my comments because I don't want to seem creepy or something (yikes - I swear I'm not!!) I have never had any negative comments on my blog, but then, I don't get many comments even though I know I have a fair amount of daily readers, so I certainly second #2 - a thoughtful comment can really make my day! I'm totally going to do a picture an hour tomorrow - what fun! Thanks for this, I'm all for making this world - virtual and real - a happier place!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oh - another fun way to find new blogs is to click on the profile of another person who has commented on one of your favorite blogs and see if s/he has a blog - chances are, if you are reading the same great blog, you may have something in common :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hi! I'm a new reader. I happened to see a link to your blog on Marcia Furman's blog (brain overflow) and wanted to see what you were all about. This is a great post. There are a lot of negative people out there, but it's funny how smiling is contagious (I mean, have you ever smiled at someone and received a grimace in return??) Sharing kind thoughts on each other's blogs is a great way to "smile" at someone through the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Urgh, that's one habit I have suuuch a hard time maintaining. I feel like after I read a cute post or something really thoughtful, I can never think of a comment that seems...I don't know, good enough? I am now going through my blog feed and making a point to comment :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. I totally agree with the above about being guilty of reading and leaving. But I am really taking your advice and making a conscious effort to comment and say what I like about the post. Thanks for these helpful tips!

  93. Thanks for the inspiration! I love reading blogs soo much and they're all so inspiring. I have a tiny bit of a hard time writing in my own because I feel like everything has been said and done, or could be said better than I could put it - it's hard getting a new blog off the ground! But I am always clicking around and finding new blogs that I love, and randomly clicking on people's links in their comments. I love knowing that every little comment I leave is read on new blogs and appreciated <3.

  96. Taking your advice...
Hi, I've only recently started blogging, but I've been reading blogs for a few years now. I have my favourites, but I also love just clicking from blog to blog and finding new ones. Most often I'll do that by clicking on commenters that talk sense, or just clicking on names that I like. That's how I found you. Happy blogging!

  97. Aw, this is so sweet. I know how much I love getting comments on my blog so I always try to do the same, but I could definitely do better. I'm going to comment even more and hopefully make the blog world a lil' better and more interactive :]

  98. I really love this post. Thanks so much for encouraging us to make the blog world a better place. I also have trouble understanding why negative comments go out there, but I can help by not being a part of it and by encouraging others in their endeavors.

I'm definitely jumping on this bandwagon.

Also, I am a new follower to you, but you have quickly become one of my favorite blogs to read. Thanks so much for being so inspiring!

  108. You are wonderful! I love reading your blog and I am one that regularly reads and doesn't comment. Thanks for the push to do so! I would love it if you wanted to stop by my little bloggie blog and become a follower. I recently started it and don't have many readers. You are very inspiring and I love your outlook on life. Love to your family from Colorado!

  110. This is lovely advice. I am easily discouraged when I don't get a new reader or a new comment in a while. I use to comment a lot on other blogs but recently thought I would try to support myself without commenting on other blogs. To tell you the truth, it was a horrible idea. I am going to get back on track on commenting on other blogs and even blogs I don't really read. I use to only comment on blogs I read but this inspires me to reach out to the blogging community even more! Thank you!

  112. This is a fantastic post! It's so important to be respectful of other people's work, and to show bloggers that you appreciate their work. I love recieving comments and emails from people telling me that I wrote something that they found helpful, or even just that they like my outfit. I think it's vital to your blogging karma to leave positive comments on other blogs that you enjoy.

Thankyou so much for writing this. I'm going to carry on with the points I already do and try to create some new good habits based on this advice.

  115. This post is inspiring, not that I'm surprised, since you just might be the most inspirational blogger I've found! I love the way in which you are able to offer advice and instruction and at the same time not seem bossy. I too am a reader and not a regular enough commenter. Thanks to this post I'm definitely going to work on changing that!
