Yesterday was a big day in the world of Henry. He has his first swim class and did so well! It's a 6-week class at our local YMCA, and it basically teaches them the basics, and what to do if they happen to fall into a pool or body of water. The instructor's baby was a little older then Henry, and when her Mom put her in the water she knew to flip on her back and float. It was pretty amazing, and even when she was put into the water face down so flipped right over. Henry just started and has a long way to go, but it makes me so happy that we're starting his early. We spend a lot of time on the water, whether it be in the ocean, on the houseboat, or in the pool, so it's really important to us that he's comfortable. It was also really fun and I think he really liked the songs and games. I can't wait until next week.

Henry also tried his first food, and we gave him the Earth's Best brown rice cereal mixed with breast milk. We gave it to him before his last feeding before bed, and he was a little fussy to begin with, so I think tonight if we time it better it should go a little more smoothly. He took about three bites but then wasn't too into it. This was the very first food he's ever had, and it was pretty adorable to see him try and figure out what the heck it was. In the video below you'll see that he doesn't really know whether to laugh or cry. Adorable. We are planning on doing the cereal for a couple of weeks, then transitioning into single vegetables. Yay Henry!
Oh, he's so sweet and precious! Brees did NOT like her cereal at first, either. We are on week 3 right now, have just started a few veggies, and she is doing a little better. My lactation consultant told me not to sweat it, as long as they are still nursing, solids are just extra. It's so sweet to see them try the new textures and tastes, though:) I love the swimming video, so wonderful to get them started so young!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all the firsts, Henry, Hank and Danielle! Must be so exciting to watch him grow :)
ReplyDeletethosefaces he made in the video are to die for! so cute!
ReplyDeleteOh he is so sweet! I can't believe my little guy will be trying food for the first time in just a few months. Babies grow much too quickly.
ReplyDeleteso cute. slow down a wee bit on the bites and give drinks in between. just my two cents to help.
ReplyDeleteAnon: thanks for the tips! We thought the same thing and slowed down tonight and it was a little better. I also appreciate you giving constructive advice!
ReplyDelete<3 <3
oh, dani, this made me smile SO big! congrats henry (and mommy & daddy) on all the firsts! so very exciting! thank you for sharing. xoxo
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Both videos! Brings back so many memories of my kids! Looks like he did pretty good for his first time with food! so cute!
ReplyDeleteI did not know you could give babies swimming lessons at such a young age. But what a good idea! Especially if you spend so much time near water, it's just smart. And that video of him and the rice is just too cute. I love his reaction even though he doesn't know what is up.
ReplyDeleteHe is pretty much the cutest! I remember when I got the chance to give my nephew his first cereal, he wasn't very into it until I started to give him smaller bites and slowed the pace down, that and let him relax and get some drinks inbetween! i also wish my parents took me to swim classes when I was at henrys age...I still can't swim!
ReplyDeleteOh the swimming pictures! So cute!
ReplyDeleteahh! you two seriously made the cutest little dude!! i used to teach swimming lessons...for a brief moment in time...just a few summers ago i taught my dear friend to float on her back using some of those same techniques and songs! haha! surely i could've come up with a more "grown up" lesson...but it totally worked! ;)
ReplyDeletego henry! he'll be a little "minnow" in no time!
loving all these little milestones!...my cousin just posted a video of her baby following the dogs out the dog door...cherish every moment! haha!
love love. xo.
When you're up to it, put a little puréed fruit in with the cereal. It sweetens it a bit. Carter's favorite is mangos :)
ReplyDeleteOh my God, Danielle the feeding video was the cuuuuuuutest thing haha. aw, the little guy looks so concerned! haha. "Do I like it? Should I be scared of it? Is this funny?" Poor little guy, he'll get used to it. Awww. You have the cuuuuutest little boy!

He is too adorable. It takes me back to when we first starting feeding Landon cereal/baby food. He didn't really care for it at first but he got the hang of it and eventually he learned to love it.
ReplyDeleteHe seems so comfortable in the water. Landon absolutely loves water and being in the pool. I haven't signed him up for swimming lessons yet but I really want to. He's just not a big fan of people/crowds yet. He gets a little freaked. That's definitely not something you want a baby to be when he's learning to swim.
Love these photos. Sonja doesn't like things in her face, so we give her solids she can hold. You can Google "child lead weaning" for more info if you're into that. She does really well with cucumbers. Oh and my location consultant said to offer food AFTER a feeding. That way they're full of milk but can try the new food. Also they're content cause they're full. Such fun transitions to solids! he's such a cutie.
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm not sure if I've commented yet, but I absolutely love your blog! And I just HAD to have my first comment be on this post because Henry is so so so so cute! I'm a single law student, but ahh you have officially made me baby crazy!
ReplyDeleteWow - that looks just like the swimming lesson I take my girl Sophie to! She's starting to love it. It's good to see we're not the only ones having a slight struggle with starting solids. Sophie HATES apple so much - but I'm going to persevere because my child health nurse said it can take twenty different tries of something before they decide if it's good or not.... I may not have the stamina for twenty times..!
ReplyDeleteOMG! The pictures to Henry and his first food are so beautiful... He is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy! <3
sweet little guy. <3 the food video was adorable - his little laugh & cry at the same time was completely precious!!
ReplyDeleteOh, Danielle. I'm Spanish so my English is not good enough to say what I want to say so I'mm have to satisfy myself telling you that Henry is the cutest baby i've ever seen and that watching his videos has cheered me up! :D
ReplyDeleteA huuuuge kiss from Barcelona and I hope you keep posting videos of Henry's firsts!

Shut up...could your baby be more cute!! Little Henry is growing up to be an adorable little lad! He looks so sweet in the pool. I soooo remember the post where you showed us all th positive pregnancy test...now look at this little guy! Time flies, eh!! I think its wonderful that you are doing this so early. So many people do not get their children used to water and its a big threat. Hearts and Chlorine, Janna Lynn
ReplyDeleteMy daughter did not want to eat the cereal with a spoon until she got older since she was so used to the breast. We bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Nuby-Nurtur-Feeder-Colors-Ounce/dp/B002RIII48%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAISITD33OEMDXDOVQ%26tag%3Dbestrevi0c-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB002RIII48
ReplyDeletenot sure if you have one, but they are amazing! its a really good transition from boob to solid food. plus, the set comes with a "no mess" spoon, too.
oh dear. the rice cereal video made me cry. haha. i think i'm mourning my max turning 7 in a few weeks.
ReplyDeletecongratulations, mr henry! such happy firsts.
<3
Aw! Hank is such a good daddy. :)
ReplyDeleteOmg he is sooo cute! How adorable.
ReplyDeleteThat was seriously SO cute!
ReplyDeleteAwww! Henry is so cute!
ReplyDeleteAwww! Henry is so cute!
ReplyDeleteGreat videos!! It's such a great idea to document such beautiful milestones.
ReplyDeleteYour baby is seriously cute. I love his wise little face.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I gave Maya her first cereal, she wolfed it down! I was prepared for her to not know what to do with it, but she was good to go. When I told my mom she said "Yeah, I had a feeling she was ready for it but I didn't want to push you." My mom was always awesome about NOT giving unsolicited advice, which was great.
Water safety is soooo important, props to you guys for starting so early!
ReplyDeletethanks Danielle. I felt bad after leaving advice, because I hate when others give unwarranted suggestions. It came from a good place (i'll have to remember that next time someone gives me advice) I am a mommy to a 22 month little boy. I love your blog! Your writing is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet! Just stumbled upon your blog you now have a new follower follow back if you like!

haha Bennett hated rice cereal too, so I think it only lasted a day until we went onto something else more tasty. I can't really blame them! :) Oh and he is such a good little swimmer!
ReplyDeleteAnother tip that might help Henry get used to the cereal is to add more breastmilk, so the texture is more watery and less chunky.
ReplyDeleteAlso, does your man have a huge "Danielle" tattoo across his chest? Very awesome.
Lucky you for having a good swim class!!!! We excitedly enrolled our little B in her first official class and the poor instructor was so shy and timid that she just sort of went around to each parent and whispered what we could do next. I love me some YMCA though :)
ReplyDeleteThe eating video cracked me up.. I love his expressions!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on all the firsts to Henry! ^-^ He is just so adorable, I can't even.. :D
ReplyDeleteI love how henry patiently waits for you while he sucks his thumb :-)
ReplyDeleteHe's super adorable! I love that he tries to grab at it. Your blog is even more fun now that I have my little one. I love knowing what milestones are coming up in the next few months!
ReplyDeleteOh no! Silly boy. I bet he'll warm up to the food soon. I love the swimming photos. It's great that my daughter is about a month behind Henry. I get to see all the exciting things to come! I'm going to get her signed up for swim classes!

Henry was pretty cute with that food I have to say. I always find that I'm starving after swimming so I bet he'll be gulping it down soon enough!
ReplyDeleteThat's it! This video made me so jealous! I want a baby so bad! This is life.
ReplyDeleteoh dear! this is too cute. the photos. the videos!!
ReplyDeletei love his face when he's eating the food. he totally looked like he couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry, haha.
