Seven years ago today

mementos from our first date- of course I saved the movie ticket! :)

Seven years ago today Hank and I went on our very first date. I still recall that feeling as I got ready for that evening- so much anticipation and so many butterflies. I remember pulling up to the Vegetarian House to meet him (he drove down from Prescott for it), and I'll never forget what it felt like walking up to him. That moment marked a distinct divide in my life. A before and after, and a part of me knew this; call me crazy but I felt l like I'd always loved him from the moment I met him, just weeks earlier at mutual friend's house. And even though I was shaking inside and so nervous, at my center I was calm, somehow knowing that this was it for me.

As the night went by we laughed and talked, we walked around Old Town Scottsdale, we went and saw a movie. We ended our night with a slice of pie and seeing some of our mutual friends at the Tempe IHOP, where we'd all often hang out after shows. The date was perfect, and as he walked me to my car I felt like tap dancing. And as he drove away that night, making the two hour trip back up north, something in my gut told me that I was very right about my feelings. I woke up the next morning to a long email, written at 4am when he got home, reassuring me of that. I still have this letter tucked away in a special place, because it's the true beginning of us.

And now seven years later we still celebrate our special first-date anniversary, and I think we always will. It's such a fun celebration of such an important day, and it's so fun to think back and remember how it all began. Seven years, and a million more to come.

If you'd like to read more, you can learn about how we met, our engagement story, or flashback to our wedding! Enjoy.

p.s. I just realized yet again how GRATEFUL I am for this blog and this space...to have all of this documented in such a way is truly amazing. Yay, blog! haha.

  2. Aw, congratulations!

This is really lovely, and rings true to how I felt when I first met my boyfriend... we slotted together so naturally that we used to joke that we had been together in another life, & on our first anniversary celebrated our "5001st anniversary". Love makes people daft, but in a lovely way :)

  5. My husband and I had been dating for 3 years when Garden State came out, but I distinctly remember going on a date with him to see it. We were both broke and we it was a huge splurge to go to the movies. I still have the ticket stub, too!

  6. I don't think you're crazy at all for knowing so instantly. :)

I just married the love of my life 2 weeks ago, and meeting him was similar. I went to a party that I didn't want to go to, because I felt like I NEEDED to...I was about to leave when I spotted him playing beer pong [haha...I know]. Seriously, when I looked over at him I felt like I was hit by a truck and somehow I just knew. That silly skinny kid is mine. :)

Anyways that ended up rambling and not concise like I meant it to...but I just wanted to let you know that this is so reassuring. I read the whole Hank & Danielle story several months ago, and you helped ME feel like I wasn't crazy for feeling so 100% sure.

    MUCH LOVE CHICA!

  19. Happy First Dateaversary! This post is just so sweet. For our first date, and first meeting actually, I had to drive 4 hours and then hop a 2 hour flight. He picked me up at the airport, I've never been more nervous in my life, but it turned out beautifully. I'm glad you guys celebrate your special day.

  35. Such a sweet story! It's an awesome thing to feel so jittery (excitement!) yet completely confident about love.

I've kept all my husband's emails and love letters, along with other little trinkets and reminders I've amassed since our first date. I put them all in a drawer and its contents are my most prized possessions. :)

  36. I think it's very cool that you guys still celebrate your first date. My husband and I had ours 7 years ago as well, though I'm not sure of the exact date. I can totally remember what he said on the voicemail he left to ask me out though because I saved it and listened to it about 100 times. Those are the sorts of things you can admit to 7 years later when you are happily married :)
    Thanks for sharing.
