Old friends & Spotify

terrafroyo

Sometimes all you need is a night with one of your oldest and dearest friends, reminiscing about college and talking about how fast life goes by and how beautiful it all is. So thankful for this girl and so thankful for friends like her. Terra was my "little sis" in our Pi Phi days and we have the most special bond. You know those friends that have seen you in every stage of your life, seen you at your best (and worst), and love you all the same? That's this girl. Love her, and I love that we got to have a fun night together while she was in town from Denver.

Now I'm in bed, enjoying my (and Hank's) newest obsession...Spotify. I think we're a little behind on this, but seriously, I don't know how I survived without it. Okay, that's dramatic. But it is pretty great. My friends Alana, Nate and Shirley turned us onto it at a party last weekend and described it as being part Pandora, part Napster, part social networking beast. I was sold when they explained that there are no ads or breaks in music, and you can listen to ANYTHING your heart desires with no limit. Granted, the premium account is $10 a month but considering how much I listen to music it's a small price to pay. Today I've been on quite the 90s kick and my main music of choice this evening been TLC. Remember CrazySexyCool? So good. And so junior high. Next up is Aaliyah's "Back and Forth" and Blackstreet's "No Diggity." And I might even round it out with a little "My Boo" by Ghostown DJs ;)

With that said, I have a couple of questions for you. One, have you tried Spotify yet? What do you think? And two, do you have any must-listen-to bands you'd like to recommend to me? I love all sorts of music from rap to country, classical to metal.

Happy four days before Christmas!

  2. You must look up Klaxons cover of No Diggity. British boys singing it is like 5xa more awesome than the original ... and the original is THE SHIT so you know that's saying something.

  3. You should listen to The Sounds. Why? Idk, it's just the band that is currently playing on my iPod right now... oh, wait, you should listen to The pierces. Why? Cause it just started on my Ipod right now.

    Enjoy!

  5. Spotify is still new to me. It has opened my eyes to more music from my roots! I would be interested in getting the premium account but i am currently just fine with the free account. I love their radio stations! I never used Pandora, so for me spotify is great!
Also its nice to see what your friends on Facebook listen to.

  8. I haven't tried Spotify yet but everyone says such good things about it I may just have to check it out. I'd recommend The Civil Wars (which you've probably heard of by now...they're my favorite lately) and a new band that I've been loving, Milo Greene. Both are folksy with some country flare. :)

  11. Yes CrazySexyCool is so junior high!! I loved that CD! Have you heard of the Pistol Annie's? Miranda Lambert is one of the three singers. I love them, they remind me of the Dixie Chicks. I also like Jason Aldean & The Band Perry.. Yes I'm a country girl!

  12. In Europe Spotify was free until it moved to the United States, so yes, I know it and I used to love it... Miss those days!! Now I'm more a grooveshark girl.

    Love William Fitzsimmons music.

  13. How AMAZING is spotify? I'm in love. Currently in rotation I have: The Black Keys, Band of Skulls, TV on the Radio, Atmosphere, Evidence, Metric, Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes, and for those times when I'm feeling festive I've been favoring A Very She & Him Christmas. Happy listening! - Meg [I purpose you create a playlist for all your faithful readers :) Just a thought]

  14. You should listen to Minus the Bear simply because they are amazing and so a great live show. Highly Refined Pirates is my favorite album but the songs on OMNI aren't bad either. I am not a fan of the album Planet of Ice, so listen to something not on that one! I hope you find as much joy in Minus as I do <3

  15. Yeah, I'm definitely obsessed with Spotify. I use it to listen to all those old favorites that I don't have on CD anymore.

If you want something good, soulful funk (great tunes for "getting stuff done"), try Candi Staton's album "I'm Just a Prisoner." She's pretty incredible.

  16. Guys! Spotify is totally FREE if you don't pay for the premium package! No commercials, just banner ads on the side of the application. No biggie!

My boyfriend and I are seeing Pusha T from Clipse in concert tonight. But one of the best shows I saw in 2011? FRANK OCEAN. Talk about romancing the mic.

  17. I absolutely ADORE spotify! I'm listening to it right now, actually! It's a perfect way to make my boring desk job go quicker, that's for sure. I pay the $10 a month, and literally listen everywhere - work, home, in the car. It's wonderful!

I can't stop listening to The Menzingers, Touche Amore, The Loved Ones, Aficionado, White Wives and Cory Branan right now. If you're into punk rock, you will l-o-v-e these all!

    happy holidays, lady!

  18. Hi I'm a new follower! I was googling "tattoo and pretty dresses" haha, because I am about to get a visble tattoo and my husband just told me as long as I can cover it up when we are at his work functions.. it just got me to wondering how much it will affect me when wearing dresses and whatnot.I came across where you talked about getting a visible tatoo in a non tattoo world and I loved it! It really just reinforced my want to get one yet really helped me to think it through and be sure of myself. I don't really look like one that would get a tattoo, but those that really know me wouldn't be suprised. Anyway, that blog really helped me out and I'm so glad to have come across your blog, it has a whole lot of everything entertaining!

  19. Ooh, I love Spotify too! As far as bands go, my favorite has been INTERPOL since high school.

Lately, I've really been enjoying WARPAINT, a foursome of very talented young ladies (girl power!) and Lana Del Rey, an internet sensation breaking into the music industry full-force. She only has three singles out so far, but you can hear more of her songs on YouTube. Her first full-length album comes out Jan.30. Enjoy!

  23. I haven't tried Spotify yet, but I've seen a ton of people on FB using it. I use Pandora and Playlist.com, but I'm intrigued. Also -- I love that you were on a 90's kick. I'm always down for some 90's music.

  25. I haven't tried spotify yet... although it keeps being mentioned to me lately so I think it's time to cave and try it out!

My newest music find/obsession is the band Young The Giant. Love! Check out the song Strings, My Body, I Got and Apartment... they are my favorites :)

Also, there is a band that is becoming really popular here in Canada called The Sheep Dogs, which are AMAZING.

  26. Spotify is the best thing and I have replaced my satellite radio with it and use the app on my phone to bluetooth the music through my car. I have been obsessing over Sarah Mclachlan & Fiona Apple in addition to the 90's music you mentioned in the post. I have also been listening to the new Jay Z & Kanye West - Watch the Throne - and Frank Ocean but also some comedy albums thrown in there.

  27. I miss Pandora though, The function where it finds similar songs for you. Since im from sweden i cant use pandora anymore and after a while of groovesharking i finally gave in to spotify (you know, everyone talks about it but you refuse to give in cus of the hype, so riddiculus). Altough iff you dont pay, the commercials are reaally really annoying...

Lately ive been in the mood for upbeat so today ive listened to sublime with rome, sublime and mighty mighty bosstones! so nice with some springy music in the midst of winter darkness.

  31. I downloaded Spotify a few weeks ago but your post made me actually use it for the first time! My recommendation is the band "Of Monsters and Men". They're a band from Iceland and their album isn't even out in America yet but Spotify has all of their songs! They're all I've been listening to lately. Their first single is "Little Talks" but the entire album is heaven! I hope you like them :)
