After talking about it for what seems like years, I finally had my first visit to a naturopath this past Friday. I've always been interested in natural medicine but for some reason or another I hesitated when actually finding one in our area. I finally decided to go through with it though, after feeling unbalanced and out of wack over the past couple of months. Since having Henry my usually clear skin has been horrible- acne on my face, eczema on my forearms, and my scalp has been super dry. I actually went and visited my regular dermatologist when I stopped breastfeeding a couple of months ago and he prescribed me acne medication. I saw a small improvement, and when I went to my follow up appointment last week he said I needed to go on antibiotics. Now, I am not opposed to medicine whatsoever- I do believe in "regular" doctors, we choose to vaccinate Henry (on a slow schedule, but we still do it), and even though I try and avoid taking medicine whenever possible, if it is needed, I'll take it. But with that said, I prefer to go the natural route whenever possible. So when my dermatologist prescribed antibiotics I got a little uncomfortable. My skin has been so bad lately that I felt like taking anitbiotics wouldn't get at the real problem or fix it long term...only mask it. But I took the prescription home, and with my Mom and Hank's encouragement made my first appointment at the naturopath's.
On Friday afternoon I headed to my appointment feeling a little nervous. I had no idea what to expect, and although the doctor came highly recommended by quite a few friends, it was still a bit scary. When I got there they had me fill out the expected paperwork but unlike most doctor's offices I'd been to, this paperwork included lots of open ended questions and even a timeline to record significant events in my life. Very cool.
I waited for less than 5 minutes in the room, and once the doctor came in I immediately felt at ease. She was AWESOME. All caps awesome. We talked for an hour about everything- my history, my health, my issues, what I hoped to gain from the visit. She really, really listened. She asked questions and made me feel so comfortable. It was like talking to a friend, but a friend who knew everything about everything and wanted to help me feel better. It was truly the best experience I have ever had at a doctor's office.
She prescribed me a couple of things- sepia drops (10 drops under my tongue for 7 days), a homeopathic cream called pharMAX heal (it's actually a trans-dermal wound healing cream but it's already almost cleared up my rash in TWO days!) for the eczema, and most notably, a sugar-elimination diet. My Mom is extemely healthy and into naturopathy so thanks to her I knew there was a good chance the doctor would recommend this to me. My Mom had actually told me the same thing months earlier, but I chose to ignore it because it's quite hard to cut out all sugar and frankly, I didn't want to. It's no fun, and we're not just talking about cupcakes and candy- it means all sugars- fruits, carbs like bread and pasta, potatoes, processed foods, etc. Although I don't eat a lot of sweets, the real problem was all of the other kinds of sugar I was consuming without even realizing it. So much fruit, so many carbs that turned to sugar in my body, you name it. And it's not that fruit is bad- but my body has been having a hard time with any sugar, so cutting it out during these 6 weeks would be important.
Overall it's not terribly hard to follow this diet because it's actually pretty similar to how I normally eat, just with a few changes. The main thing I've noticed (and missed) is fruit, and all of the processed "healthy" treats I find myself eating daily- Larabars, mini Luna bars, little 100 calorie packs of cookies from Trader Joe's, dark chocolate...all of the good stuff. But the things I can eat are good too- lots of whole foods like produce, lean proteins, and nuts- and of course tons of water. I never, ever drink soda, but I'd imagine if someone was into soda this diet could be a little more difficult. But as far as what I've been eating, today I enjoyed lots of different types of food from an avocado to a sweet potato and broccoli, to Greek yogurt with almonds. And I know it's probably in my head but I already feel so much better.
I'm motivated to stick to it, and I'm curious to see how my skin clears up over the next few weeks. I have a feeling that the benefits will extend far beyond just my skin though, and I'm excited to just feel even healthier overall!
I encourage any of you who have been thinking of checking out a natural doctor to do so. I feel really empowered by taking my health into my own hands, and I am still glowing from my awesome experience. I'll keep you all posted on my progress, too! :)

That's really inspiring! I can't imagine parting with fruit though, fruits are my favourite healthy foods. Good luck with the whole thing though, I hope you'll update us in a couple weeks!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind me asking - what was the cream she prescribed for your eczema? I have battled it for years and cannot seem to find anything that helps.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for an update! :)
I would love to do the whole natural health kick, but man.. it's got to be hard to eliminate things and really take the step! I'm so inspired by this post, though. I definitely want to slowly improve my health. I'm so glad you went to it and you feel great!
ReplyDeleteWow! What an inspiring doctor visit. I have always had trouble with back pain. Maybe a natural fix would be good for me because I don't like taking strong pain killers. In my opinion, they have too many addictive properties for frequent usage. I hope you get to feeling better! xo, rv

this is really inspiring and i can't wait to read about your progress and updates. i have similar skin issues and i currently take a prescription for one of them, but i feel the same way you do about it. i feel like my skin might be trying to tell me something and i don't want to cover up symptoms with medication.
ReplyDeleteanyways, keep us posted, and in the meantime i'll do some of my own research of naturopathy!
Thank you everyone for the encouraging comments! :)
ReplyDeleteDiana- I went ahead and edited the post to include the cream name! Good luck! <3
Rae- you definitely should, and if you do, let me know how it goes!
xoxo
I also waited for years. Today I'm going for the second time and I will get my diet. I hope we will have a great skin in a couple of weeks!=)
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your diet.
Danielle- I go to a holistic dr/chiro and love it! It is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteP.s. Check out my blog tomorrow- I am doing a whole weeks worth of "Clean and Green" natural products, essential oils, etc. : )
Love to you!
-Mandy
This is great what your doing. I've recently started going to more natural remedies when it comes to me health. This is inspiring! I've actually never heard of a naturopath, now I'm curious to see if there's any near me!
ReplyDeleteYeeeessssssss!!!!! So excited for you. Natural medicine is so often more effective and gentle on your beautiful body! I can't wait to hear how it all works out for you.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I've been reading your blog for a while but this is my first comment. I've been doing sugar free since new years, and am really enjoying. I'm surprised at the bloating that has gone - I always thought it was a post-baby bump! I've been reading Sarah Wilson's blog whe there are a bunch of us doing I Quit Sugar. Lots of support and tips over there. Good luck with your diet and health!
ReplyDeleteI worked for a homeopathic doctor for a little over three years. The best experience of my life. I have see just about EVERYTHING!! Natural medicine is quite amazing.
ReplyDeleteI am really happy you are going this route, and I hope soon your entire little family with got his way too. :-)
this is really interesting. I doubt I could ever cut all sugars because I already eat an incredibly limited diet due to my Crohn's (I can't eat most vegetables...so at the very least I need fruit!). I'm curious to see if it works for you as well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I know you work out, so make sure you eat enough/the right nutrients (I always thought carbs were important for those who workout). Just a thought.
Wow, this post is so perfectly timed for me. I suffer from HS, and I've just been put on long term antibiotics and I'm not feeling great about it - like you said, I feel like it wouldn't be getting to the root cause. I don't know if they have Naturopath's in the UK, but I'm off to Google it just now! xo
ReplyDeleteThis post has truly inspired me. I've been wanting to see a naturopath for a while now. Between either being pregnant or nursing for the last three years my skin has hit rock bottom. I've been diagnosed with psoriasis and can't really do anything about it while I nurse Abe (or so I thought). I eat healthy, but have heard about the no sugar and have resisted. I'm so miserable and need to do something. You have inspired me to make an appointment!
ReplyDeleteEven though it may be a little hard push through because in the end it will be well worth it!!
ReplyDeleteI had to do a drastic change on my diet for 7 weeks of no sugar (fruit too), yeast, dairy, carbs, and gluten. And I felt the best I ever had!!
Good luck!
Hi! new to your blog but this post is so in tune to what i as thinking! i am defitnely going to try to find one in my area as I have been having the same issues with my skin. thanks from a new follower!
ReplyDeleteI did not even know what to search for when looking for natural doctors. Naturopath. Perfect. I've been trying to stop taking medicine when it's not necessary lately and this seems like the next step. I'm so happy you had that great of an experience!
ReplyDeleteAlso - I've been seriously thinking about cutting out all sugar. I have the worst sweet tooth though and always crave something sweet (even just fruit) after a meal because I don't like the lingering taste of food. Maybe I'll just start brushing my teeth after meals. So not as satisfying though.
This is so inspiring!! I'm so interested, but a sugar free diet sounds like work. What kinds of ingredients do you look for to know if something contains sugar? (because I just checked out a few boxes in my cupboard and none of the said 'sugar' but I know it's there!)
ReplyDeleteI love this post! I, too, have been dealing with unexpected acne but mine is not because of childbirth. I turned 31 last year and my doc diagnosed me with adult acne and rosacea and of course...antibiotics. I work for a health food store and I have relunctantly taken the pills, but only because I have tried everything else under the sun. It's been close to a year now since this problem started and I'm doing a month long cleanse with no sugar and I'm hoping to kick the antibiotic habit. I'm glad that you went to a naturopath, they're awesome!
ReplyDelete--julie
I have had skin problems as well and have cut out gluten and sugar completely.
ReplyDeleteSugar is hard to cut out but once you do, you notice that you are more alert, digestion is easier, and you just have way more energy in general. Trust me, soon you won't even crave it!
I've been using stevia in my yogurt and teas and I highly recommend it. Its satisfying but has absolutely no calories/sugar. My favorite is stevia clear (it comes in different flavors too).
Good luck!
Danielle, thank you SO much for posting this. I've been having (non-childbirth-related) a lot of skin problems over the past 6 months and I'm at my wit's end, and VERY hesitant to visit a dermatologist because I'm afraid they'll just mask the problem. I actually work at a homeopathic medicine company so I'm very receptive to natural medicine. Maybe this post is the inspiration I need to actually go visit a naturopath...thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteIs the sugar elimination diet permanent, or just until your skin clears up?

Yay! So glad you had a great visit with your naturopath! I went before I had kids, and all she did was look at my tongue and the whites of my eyes and told me I needed to cut out dairy. I did, and it was AMAZING how much better I felt after only a week or so. I think sugar needs to go, now that I've had kids and my body has morphed into an entirely different animal!
ReplyDeleteI've wanted to cut out sugar in my diet. I've heard that if you do,then those 'artificial sweeteners' aren't that great for you and also you have to check the labels for the sodium intake. Is this true or just a rumor I've heard over the years? Either way,I think I might look into seeing a naturopath and eliminating sugar altogether.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like she put you on a paleo/primal eating plan. I've been following the paleo way of eating for almost a year now and it has changed my skin, my hair, my body composition, my mood and my energy levels for the better. Conventional wisdom is not the only way to cure what ails you and I'm so glad that people are coming around to think outside of the box. Good luck, I hope you have found what will work for your body!
ReplyDeleteisn't is amazing what cutting out sugar can do?? that's also part of why i cut out dairy. i just felt so much better. my stomach felt better and my skin.
ReplyDeletei'm on and off with the sugar. i love my dark chocolate ;)
I'm so happy to hear your appointment went so well!
ReplyDeleteDid your naturopath mention candida or a yeast overgrowth? My naturopath diagnosed me with candida. I've been on a sugar/gluten/dairy free diet for the past 4 months for crohn's and scleritis. I was on Remicade before I started the diet and didn't like the idea of being on a long term medication. Since starting the diet I have felt great and i'm completely off the medication! At times it's been hard as I can't eat out or at peoples houses b/c I'm not willing to take a risk and eat something that might have sugar or gluten in it. Do you have to cut out gluten as well? I have some great gluten/sugar free recipes that I would love to share with you. I find that a lot of recipes are gluten free but they aren't sugar free.
Good luck with everything!
It feels like such an accomplishment when the natural stuff works, doesn't it? My acupuncturist / herbalist also advised me to cut down on sugar... I was sort of indignant about, telling her that I hardly consumed sweets, when she nailed me for all the fruit I eat! Who knew. It's been tough for me to cut back too, but has ultimately helped me to feel better.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about seeing a Naturopathic Doctor for years. It's cool to hear that your visit went great. It's motivating me to look for one now. :) I have a lot of inflammation problems, so I am sure that I will be told to cut out sugar - which scares me because I have a super sweet tooth and am addicted to dark chocolate. Keep us posted on your naturopathic experience! ;)
ReplyDeletegosh, I have really thought about going to one of these doctors for my crazy skin. Maybe I will try to cut out sugar completely too!
ReplyDeleteI've been making a conscious effort to eat healthier lately - with as little sugar as possible and fewer unneccesary fats and all of that bad stuff - put together with exercise and the result a great healthy feeling!
ReplyDeleteI hope it all works out the best for you :)

So happy to hear all of this! My mom works in natural medicine and it honestly saved my life when I was in high school. I hope it continues to help you! "Regular" medicine absolutely has its place, I really believe that - but I think going the natural way whenever possible can end up helping in ways regular medicine can't, and that's so awesome! Can't wait to hear how you're doing!
ReplyDeleteIt's refreshing to hear other woman talk about this. I go to a naturopath and I recently had my first scan done. I was shocked to find out that my hormone issues were stemming from a thyroid problem. I'm currently on Iodoral, a natural thyroid med. I know you will see results with this doctor. They know the body so well and I'm thrilled you are already feeling better!!
ReplyDeletei know i need to do this too. i'm having an insanely difficult time just being honest with myself and making it happen. i find it so hard not to put maple syrup in my oatmeal, or have fruit in my yogurt. and i mean, its worse than that too, my life is one sugar packed frenzy right now (i blame it on transitioning, lol) but its the little things that get me. sure, i can say no to cupcakes and pasta, but ask me not to have honey in my tea and we have a problem. haha.
ReplyDeletei'm going to refer to this post as inspiration once i feel ready to pursue this :)

my friends all go to a homeopathic doctor and it seems pretty cool. thanks for sharing your experience. can't wait to hear more as you go!
ReplyDeleteThis might be my first comment on your blog? Can't remember now but I'm an Arizonan too and I love your blog! This post was really great. I would loooove to go to a naturopath but haven't been able to yet.
ReplyDeleteI've had bad acne for close to 10 years now (ugh, depressing to say that). I had some luck with the acne regimen from acne.org, but I still always had acne. I finally went to a dermatologist in August and he prescribed me antibiotics. I was very hesitant about his advice because I really didn't want to be on medication and knew that antibiotics also eliminate the good bacteria. I did a lot of research and talked to my family about it, and finally decided to try the antibiotics (4 pills a day!) with an end date in sight about 6 months out. I had read about changing my diet but wasn't personally read for such an overhaul. Unfortunately, I still felt anxiety in taking the pills, and they were very inconvenient because I had to take them either 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after.
I was on antibiotics for 4 months and they worked pretty well, skin-wise. I went back to my doc and because I still had some acne, he upped my dosage to 6 pills a day and basically told me that we were just treating the outbreaks but it was no cure and I may have to rotate antibiotics with no end date in sight.
Hearing it from my doctor was what I needed to make the change. Why would I want to be on antibiotics for the rest of my life? There was way too many risks and down sides to the medication and I hated being dependent on it.
I finally did more research, this time more specifically into diet. My doctor told me with a straight face that diet does not affect acne, so I hope to prove him wrong. I'm finally ready to make the changes and have come to similar conclusions that you have. I'm eliminating sugar (although not all fruit, yet at least) and most grains, starting with wheat. Basically any carbs that raise my insulin. Two of the hardest things to say goodbye to are bread and candy. Sigh. But it's worth it!
I've only been doing this for a couple of weeks so I look forward to hearing about your progress as well. You might also be interested to hear that sugar has been linked to cancer so just one more reason to eliminate it! Look up the book Sugar Blues if you're interested in more reasons to quit.
Also, I've found some good recipes that replace white flour with coconut flour and/or almond flour. Paleo and traditional food recipes are sugar free and have been helpful in making the switch. One of my favorite recipes sites is http://deliciouslyorganic.net/. Her baked shrimp is one of the best meals I've ever made!
Oookay, I'm not usually the type to spill my guts in the comment section, so I apologize! But this is a topic near and dear to my heart. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you feel great with the new change!!
A few years ago I was at the same stage as you...and I can honestly say I love natural medicine and have found it really beneficial. Like you im not 'againsf'. Normal medication and doctors - I actually think the two can work well together - but naturopathy just makes sense. It's all about loving and nurturing your body not loading it up with chemicals!! Good luck :-) xx
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I took the time to read this, because I have struggled with acne for half my life and I am so tired of it. I know what I need to do but it was good hearing it come from your dr via you... so glad you shared!

My skin has seriously been acting a fool lately; maybe I should cut back on the sweets as well? Too bad Luna bars are my kryptonite. :-/
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've been wanting to see a natural doctor for a while. This might be just the inspiration I needed. Thanks!
You should try witch Hazel as a toner and before use a really gentle face cleanser! I am trying it out right now and its cleared up after 3 days!!
ReplyDeleteDanielle, what great news! I went to the dermatologist for my yucky post-baby skin and she gave me something topical and then wanted to put me on antibiotics... I decided against the antibiotics. Too weird. Good luck with the no sugar thing. You are stronger than I am!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your experience with a naturopathic doctor. It is interesting to hear so many others either have (or want to) go to a naturopath. I wanted to go to school to become a naturopath, but unfortunately it was much too expensive.
ReplyDeleteHere is a website about Naturopathic Medicine (from the California Naturopathic Doctor's Association). The videos at the top include advise on acne and other ailments.
http://www.calnd.org/naturopathic-medicine-the-basics
Also, it is important to look up the laws in your state regarding Naturopaths, what they can treat, and if your insurance will cover. If insurance does not cover, write to your state to get these laws changed. We should be able to see whatever type of doctor we want (and be covered) :)
Danielle - Hope everything works out for you and the treatment is successful. Sometimes combining conventional and naturopathic medicine can be just the right cure. Feel better!
Thanks for sharing this! My skin has been pretty horrible for the last few years, and when my doctor at the time told me 'to tell me skin to grow up' (really), it was super discouraging. I've recently switched to natural skin care products, and was contemplating a dermatologist, but was thinking about a naturopath, instead...you've definitely given me some oomph to check one out! :)
