Our Sunday: Flagstaff, Trains, and Autumn Leaves

For the past week or so it's been all about trains in our house. Henry has been loving Thomas the Train and all things train-related, so Hank and I decided to take a little roadtrip up to Flagstaff to watch "Thomas and Friends" go by.

Whether you're a parent or not, I'm sure you can relate to having an expectation about how you want something to go, especially with little ones. In this case, I had this wonderful vision in my mind of sitting at the train station with Hank and Henry, sipping on a hot drink, and enjoying the rush and sounds of the trains going by. So much of that depended on so much; the weather, Henry's mood, and most of all, if and when trains were running. But I am so happy (and feeling so lucky) to miraculously report that my hopes for the day totally matched up to its reality. It was really a perfect afternoon, and Henry had the best time. We were able to sit outside the station for awhile and watch freight trains go by every 15 minutes or so. One of my most favorite parenting moments ever has to be watching Henry's face light up as he yelled "THOMASSSSSS!" as loud as he could when he first spotted it coming down the tracks. Honestly, it doesn't get much better than that.

The rest of the day was filled with collecting leaves and rocks in the various spots we stopped to hang out, eating our favorite vegan treats and my favorite breakfast sandwich from Macy's, perusing a couple shops, and really just soaking up the beautiful weather. It was a wonderful Sunday full of family and fun, and we're already counting down to the Polar Express train ride in December.

Here are some photos from our day:

  1. Henry's yellow cords are adorable! I can totally relate to wanting to go somewhere just because your child/toddler will love it. We did that recently at the National Zoo and had so much fun! Another perfect day.

  5. I had no idea Arizona could look like that (I'm an upstate NY gal) and I love it! I visited once but it was July- phew! Those pictures of Henry on a college campus are going to be so priceless once he goes off to college- even if it's a different campus. And those mustard pants!!! love :)

  9. Flagstaff looks like a cute town. I've vowed to never live far from a railroad track. Our condo is nestled right beside the tracks and I'm treated to a whoosh of jangling steel 15 or 20 times a day. People who don't live near trains think that this would be very loud or inconvenient, but I barely notice anymore. To me, the railroad is like a pulse or a heartbeat - a circadian comfort I'm not conscious of unless it has stalled or skipped a beat.

  10. Lovely photos! It looks like you had a great day filled with fall weather, yummy food and train watching. Macy's is by far my favorite!

Side note: As super stalker like as it sounds, I am pretty sure I saw you! Well more correctly, I saw Henry (which sounds even more stalker like). I noticed his mustard pants and red shoes and something familiar about him. I have been reading your blog for a few months now and for some reason it just did not occur to me that you guys are down in Verde valley and could have easily come to Flag and that it could really possibly be you and Henry.

Haha. Really, I hope one day I get to pick an outfit as cool as that for my son.

    Love, Saar

  12. i love to see flagstaff in other people's posts. we've been taking nature walks and collecting leaves every night, but we haven't found any that look like the red one you found above. and we live right downtown - so funny. and, by the way, thank you so much for the prescott suggestions. i am kind of in love with the wild iris! we have good coffee here as you know, but we don't have a coffee shop with a bakery. i want to go back to prescott just for more wild iris!

  14. We live in Eugene, OR but grew up in Mesa and plan on Christmassing in AZ this year and pretty much every year we can swing it (yay, family!) and next year we are SO DOING THE POLAR EXPRESS it sounds like freaking magic! Your Flagstaff day brought back all kinds of happy memories for me via the pics. Looks like so much fun :)

  15. Okay for some reason when I read that Henry yelled Thomas it almost made me cry, only because Judah does the same thing! We have a train nearby (that takes local people to DC for work) and when I take Judah outside to play in the dirt with his trucks he will stop what he is doing and say "thomas!!!" when he hears the train come through. I love their pure excitement over trains! Isn't that just silly to get excited with them :-) I never want Judah to grow up or to lose that excitement :-)

Oh and I swear you live in one of the most beautiful places in the world! I keep thinking northern virginia/DC has the prettiest fall and then you post these pictures!

  17. I think you should remove that hat and never ever let him wear it ever again just because it makes him look so old! Haha. Seriously though, his outfit is adorable and your day looks absolutely perfect. Such good parents :)
