the most amazing cake from Veronica's Valentine's party last week- lemon, strawberry, and red velvet. I'm actually going to get crazy and say it was THE BEST cake I've ever had in my life.
Watching: ***Spoiler alert for Top Chef and The Bachelor if you're not caught up! Anyway, I'm watching the same old stuff I always watch but a few notable things- one, how GREAT is this season of Top Chef? I'm really loving it, and my pick for the win is Sheldon. I think he's the sweetest thing and such a great chef. I've just really been enjoying this season, even though any time I watch it I'm immediately hungry. It's also made me have an even bigger interest in going to Alaska- it looks beautiful. Secondly, the Bachelor...my not-so-guilty pleasure. This season is okay, right? Not great but fairly interesting. I really like AshLee and I think she's my favorite, but I don't know if she would necessarily be a good match for Sean. I feel like he'll probably end up picking Lindsey or Catherine, although I don't feel like Catherine and him have much of a connection. We'll see! Who is your favorite so far?
Thinking about: the internet and how quickly it changes, and how different aspects of it become a part of our daily life...and others just don't. I really tried to get into the Vine app. In fact, at first I thought I could really love it and imagined it would become a part of my normal social media routine. For a few days I enjoyed it, but after a week had passed I realized it just wasn't a natural thing to do- I had to really think about opening the app, where as with Twitter and Instagram it's almost an organic thing to share via those avenues. On a whole separate note I'm not too sure if that's a good thing either- to have a funny thought and want to share it immediately. Hmm. But anyway, Vine just didn't fit into my little online world. Did you have a similar experience? Or are you still loving it?
Reading: I've been blazing through the Beautiful Creatures series and LOVING it. I was a little unsure about even starting it (I'd only seen the movie preview) but I'm beginning book three after just a week of obsessively reading during any chance I get, and I am so hooked. Great writing, wonderful storyline. I'll talk more about it later in a book review but I'm so into this series.
Looking forward to: Finding out the sex of the baby. I'm at exactly 14 weeks today (hello second trimester!) and we have a month and a half to go. We aren't doing any fancy ultrasounds, or early 3D ones to determine if the baby is a boy or girl so we have to wait alllll the way until 20 weeks. And speaking of the sex of the little one, one of my readers left an interesting comment about how we mistakenly use the term "gender" when talking about this. It's actually always "finding out the sex," because gender is socially constructed. Thanks Alicia!
Making me happy: sweet Henry as always and his ever-growing vocabulary, Valentine's night at home with my two guys, really enjoying working out on my own- and loving listening to music again. I sure miss Crossfit but I am enjoying doing it on my own a lot more right now, warm weather dreaming, egg and bacon sandwiches for breakfast, citrus ANYTHING, long walks with Henry, some awesome new blog stuff on the horizon, feeling purposeful in my daily life, and starting to feel SO much better with the arrival of this second trimester.
So, how about you? What are you up to today? Feel free to do your own "currently" post on your blog and link back in the comments for everyone to check out. And thanks again to my dear friend Megan for providing the original inspiration for these posts.

Oh my goodness, that cake looks amazing!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Vine as I just couldn't think of why and how it would be good for me. Interesting isn't it - some apps just don't draw us in.
I posted my Currently the other day.

Thanks Tara! :) I'll head over and check yours out! <3
Deleteare there such things as fancy ultrasounds to find out the sex earlier? This pregnancy my OB's office said to do the anatomy ultrasound between 18-20 weeks, and we got to find out at 18 weeks just due to scheduling of my husband being out of town for business after that. Our first baby we found out by accident at 14 weeks because there was no mistaking that he was a boy. With #2 we waited until 20 weeks, because that was when we were scheduled. I am excited for you guys to find out, and know that either way that baby is going to be so loved.
ReplyDeleteHey Clare!
DeleteI guess not necessarily "fancy," but here it's standard to do it at 20 weeks to be sure, but if I was to go down to the city they could do an early one at 14! :)
I'm SO excited to share what we're having as soon as we know. Now it's just somehow waiting until then...ahh!
xoxo
that's so funny--I guess every place is different. I don't think I ever had an ultrasound tech who would even guess at things, but our friend just had their first trimester screening (at 13 weeks), and her tech was totally guessing! In the past, mine wouldn't even go there.
DeleteI feel the exact same way about vine. I think it's cool and I wanted to love and use it but I just didn't.
ReplyDeleteYup! I feel like it might be the general consensus!
DeleteI actually just uploaded my first video to Vine since the initial spark wore off. I probably won't delete it anytime soon, but when an app or social media site feels like a chore, as Vine does for me, that's a pretty solid sign it isn't worth investing too much time in.
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks gorgeous! I have been so into baking layer cakes lately - so fun and pretty :)
A chore is the PERFECT way to describe it. And I totally agree!
DeleteI've never baked a cake like this before (this was made by a local baker) but would love to learn- especially that gorgeous frosting technique!
Sheldon is an amazing chef, I just got back from visiting a friend on Maui and she immediately took me to one of his restaurants Star Noodle. By far one of the best meals I have ever eaten and I heard his other restaurant Leodas is just as delicious!
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome. Next time we're in Maui we will have to check it out. :)
DeleteAs a current Alaskan resident I can say with confidence- it IS beautiful up here :) A trip worth taking someday!
ReplyDeleteIt's right on the top of our MUST GO list! I can't wait to see it in person one day.
DeleteThe Bachelor is my guilty pleasure too! I've been recapping it all season, which makes it way more fun. And I'm with you, I like AshLee but I'm afraid he will pick one of the other two. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Brayn of Chalayn
Oh you have? Yay! I'll have to pop over and check out your recaps.
DeleteI'm sorta suprised that you like AshLee. I CAN'T stand her :) haha. There's just something about her that seems fake + irks me. I really like Lesley before he kicked her off. Now I'm cheering for Lindsay I guess. I agree with you about the vine app. It would be better if you could import video. ♥Lindsay
ReplyDeleteYou're not the first person to be surprised that I like her! I don't know, I just think she actually does seem genuine and she reminds me SO much of one of my close friends from college! Team AshLee! ;)
Deletethat cake looks delicious! would love to try it! also soooo excited about seeing beautiful creatures! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful cake! I would love to do an ombre cake like that for our 10th anniversary this year.

Vine is kind of boring, I was excited about it for a day and now? Meh...
ReplyDeleteI really want to read the Beautiful Creatures series! Love love love young adult fantasy, even at the ripe old age of 30. I've just discovered Juliet Marillier and Kristin Cashore and I love their books. I've also finally started the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones (love her so much) and it's so cute! I also really want to read the Mortal Instruments books. ALSO! Did you see that Divergent #3 is coming out in October?! OMG.
Vine was fun and still is so because it has helped truly bring my online friends to life. I think that is why I fell in love with it at first. But it does seem like chore to open the app and I don't have anything daily to record. Even for 6 seconds.
ReplyDeleteI was inspired when I saw this post and did one of my own!
Have a great day,
Sally

Yep, I feel ya on Vine. I liked it for about a week, but its tedious, if you could import video it would definitely be better.
ReplyDeleteI've abandoned Top Chef for the season. I live in Seattle and it's been a total snooze for me. I don't feel Bravo has represented Seattle very well. I think it's telling that the show makes you want to visit Alaska, and not Seattle. I'm rooting for Catherine in the Bachelor, 'cause she's a local girl!
ReplyDeleteHoly guacamole, that CAKE! I am seriously drooling over here.
ReplyDeleteAlso a BIG congrats to you and the family on your newest addition, so happy for you!
it is so funny how things can get so hyped and a whole week goes by and it's totally forgotten - like vine. :) btw that cake looks absolutely divine!
ReplyDeletethat cake is insane! very impressed!
ReplyDeleteone of my friends is pregnant with her first child and she is due beginning of april - they have decided not to find out the sex. she said its really one of the last great surprises you can treat yourself to. i never really thought about it. i think because its just such a normal thing to find out the sex and prepare for which ever sex you'd be having. but i think i agree with her - if i were to have a child, as much as i know i would want to know, i really think i would wait to for that extra suspense and one last true surprise you can encounter.

Ahh! I was so scared I might have offended you with the sex/gender comment! Yay for spreading knowledge!
ReplyDeleteWow, that cake looks amazing! I love any sort of lemon flavored dessert and that frosting is just...well, the frosting on the cake! :)
ReplyDeleteI also couldn't get into Vine. I downloaded it to see what all the buzz was about and tried to get into it for a week, but eventually deleted it. I just felt like I was doing it because I was afraid of missing out on something and it felt really unnatural to me, too. Also, it made me dizzy and I'd always felt really anxious while using it - odd!
I absolutely think you should visit Alaska!! And when you do, come visit us! We can have a Henry (x2)and baby date!
ReplyDelete-Victoria/GrowNorth
Oh, and I think I like Lindsay best. As far as a match for Sean goes at least. I think they would be the best fit, but I have a feeling Catherine will win. I kind of hope I'm wrong though!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about Vine! At first I was all excited and the girls and I were having a blast making videos but than I started getting creeped out. The majority of the people that are posting videos are not the people that I want seeing my children. The final straw was when my girls and I are were under the #loop category and there was an extremely explicit video that my children had no business seeing. After that I deleted my account. I just finished reading Beside the Empty Cradle, it's a book about infertility and pregnancy losses and it was amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone that has dealt with either of these issues. It is informative and healing.
ReplyDeleteOoooh I love Vine! And I thought your videos of Henry were way too cute!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for more people to get on it so I have more good stuff to follow!
Can't wait to see the adorable little creature you give birth to!
xoxo,

I feel a little overwhelmed with social media as it is. A lot of my friends joined Vine and I decided just to not even try it. I don't want to get sucked into something else!
ReplyDeletei liked Vine for about 4 or 5 days and then the porn hit, then it disappeared, then I just posted videos of my dog and thought the whole thing was kind of pointless. It also felt a little weird to be seeing videos of people(and their kids, their homes, etc) that i've only ever seen online... it felt almost too intimate. So I deleted it after a week.
ReplyDeleteExciting news in the baby dept! I think it'll be a girl :)
That cake is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteVine was never really an app that interested me. But I definitely agree that social media has become a natural thing. Sometimes it gets to the point where I wonder if I'm exposing too much of myself and putting too much of myself out there.

Here's my Currently, and probably one of the younger ones too. :)

I couldn't get into the Vine app either. Oh well. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are enough for me I guess.
ReplyDeleteI love the gender/sex comment...that's something I haven't thought about since college, and I can't believe I forgot about the difference in terms!
Here's my February 'Currently' post. http://www.life-between.com/2013/02/currently-february-2013.html
Wow, that cake is amazing!
ReplyDeleteI totally hear you on Vine. I tried it for a week, too, and just couldn't get into it. In fact, it was stressing me out trying to come up with a good enough video worth sharing, or something to cool to make a video of. I'd rather stick with Instagram which feels way more organic and natural, and like a realistic snapshot of everyday life.
Oh, wow! We're only a bit of time apart. The 20 was my birthday and I was a little over 16 weeks! I've been anxiously waiting to find out the sex, I'm so excited. I'm glad someone agrees on the gender/sex avenue, so many people keep saying gender to me, and even though I usually bite my tongue, I do discuss it with closer friends of mine. Such a pet peeve of mine when people say, "but it's the SAME thing!"
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to love vine! I have tons of pictures of my daughter, but I've been so bad about video. I'm not a fan of having to open the app to film, though, rather than being able to upload videos I took with my camera. I don't have internet on my phone unless I'm at home here in Tanzania, so I can't really use the app when we're out and about.
ReplyDeleteHere's my currently: http://www.waytothesea.com/2013/02/currently_24.html
I love hearing what you're reading and watching.. I've read and seen so many great things because of your recommendation so THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteHere's my currently post: http://followk.blogspot.ca/2013/02/currently.html
That cake looks DELICIOUS! Did she make/decorate it herself? If so, please ask her to share her skills with the world :) I had a feeling Vine would just end up being a time-suck for me, so I resisted from the get go. Glad to see I didn't miss out on anything!
ReplyDeleteI finally boarded the Currently train, here is my post: http://littleladyliving.blogspot.com/2013/02/currently.html
I always love your currently posts! And all of your other ones too. :)) I decided to make one too for the second time ever! Thanks for the insipriation!
