Currently.

Untitled
Monday morning at our house.

Reading: I'm kind of skipping between a few different books. I was initially trying to finish up The Beautiful Creatures series although I kind of lost steam for awhile. As much as I have loved those books by the third I felt like the formula was way too predictable. But at the same time I do enjoy the storyline and characters so I'm trying to stick with it. I also have a few books on my Kindle I need to dig into including this one, which looks awesome and has been on my list forever.

Listening to: You know when you get stuck in a music rut? That's me right now. I feel like I've listened to everything I love until I'm sick of it, and I haven't found anything new in the longest time! Any suggestions to bands I may not have heard of, send them my way!

Thinking about: the news. I had this conversation the other day with a girlfriend about how we can't figure out if more terrible things are happening than usual, or if we are just more plugged into what's going on the world. I mean obviously global warming has a huge hand in the rise of natural disasters, but aside from that factor, it still seems like so many more of them are happening than I could have ever imagined. And then there are all the terrible things we read and hear about everyday- the shootings, bombings, etc. What do you think? Do you think our world is becoming worse off than it's ever been, or are we just hearing about everything more?

Watching: so Henry takes 3-4 hour naps every afternoon, and I usually spend at least an hour of that doing around the house stuff, another hour or two doing online stuff, and then one of those hours "taking my lunch" and watching an episode of whatever television show I'm into at the moment. Last week in a fit of avoiding watching my DVR-ed Bachelorette episode (seriously, this turned into the worst season ever) I turned to Netflix to find a new show. The new 90210 jumped out at me, so I gave it a whirl and was hooked. It's so great, in only the way a spin-off, trashy, teen drama show can be. And I'm loving it. Have any of you seen it?

Bummed out on: "Bummed out on" is the worst term to use in this situation, but the Doce Wildfire that's been burning since yesterday is just horrible. Right now it's 0% contained and has burned almost 7,000 acres. Lots of homes have been evacuated, but so far no structures have been burned, even though last night firefighters were fighting fires in the backyards of some people out in Williamson Valley. Fire season is a scary thing up here, and all it takes is one careless person, and that's exactly what started this fire. I haven't read the exact cause yet, but they have mentioned it was started by a human...ugh. And tomorrow extremely high winds are expected, so I'm hoping that the firefighters are all safe as they continue to fight the fire.

Loving: okay onto the positive stuff...seeing my parents today on their way home from Las Vegas yesterday, Henry being SO silly and so excited about everything, nectarines (still on that kick), these shoes for Charlie and folding up all of his teeny tiny clothing, only having 8 weeks left until we meet the little guy, planning big video chat dates with my college girls, anything sea salt and chocolate, and the fresh flowers Hank got me last week still looking beautiful- Trader Joe's has the best flowers!

So, how about you? What are you up to today? Feel free to do your own "currently" post on your blog and link back in the comments for everyone to check out. And thanks again to my dear friend Megan for providing the original inspiration for these posts.

  2. The Doce Wildfire is so sad, as you said, lets hope everyone stays safe.
Music wise i'd definitely give "The Child Of Lov" a listen.
Great Currently post as usual Sweetness!

  3. 'I Can Make A Mess' just came out with new music. Pretty good!

And I have thought the same about all the horrible thigs on the news. I think it's both being more plugged in and just more bad thigs happening. This world can be pretty scary.

  4. I try not to watch any news on TV, and just skim over our local news online in case there's something big I don't want to miss, but really, I have to step back and ignore it most of the time or I get too down about it all. Hoping the fire situation is under control over there soon, it's sounds pretty scary.
    Love your blog btw!

  5. Hope the fire will be stopped soon, but we really should step back and not worry about things too much, especially when they're scary. It's not like we can do anything about it.

Love the photo so, so much!
    Lots of love

  7. 'The Book Thief' is one of my favorite books! Markus Zusak is a great author, I also love 'I am the messenger' - completely different than TBT but such a wonderful book. you should read both :)
btw, I always love your book recommendations since we seem to have similar taste (I also love dystopian novels and YA books). 'Before I fall' is one of my alltime favorites, also 'This Lullaby' by Sarah Dessen (she writes great YA books) and I love everything from John Green (especially 'Paper Towns').
wow, that's what I call an overuse of the word 'love' - but I'm just like that when it comes to books :)

    1. I LOVE all of Sarah Dessen! My aunt is a high school librarian and when I was that age (really starting at about 14) she introduced me to her and I couldn't get enough! I'm also a sucker for Jodi Picoult.

  8. I absolutely LOVE this idea! I will definitely be doing a post on it soon and will post the link

btw - what you're currently thinking about... I think as we get older we realise more and more how the news actually does affect us and it far more accessible as technology increases that it becomes almost impossible not to know (or care) about what is happening in the world.

  9. I don´t know what kind of music you are into but since my husband is a musician maybe you want to have a listen to his band BOYSETSFIRE, they are from Delaware, even though my husband is German and we live in Germany. Also, our friend Dave Hause who has been touring with Gaslight Anthem, The Bouncing Souls, Apologies I Have None...I listen to Dashboard Confessional a lot lately, the new Tegan and Sara album (even though I don´t like it as much as their old stuff), always and forever Coldplay :-) and my favourite Aussie band The Waifs.

  10. Currently getting ready for my last day of work! So excited for the summer and a change of scenery. I'm leaving my current position and moving on, which is scary (because I don't know where I'll be come fall), but also thrilling.

Listening to: That Daft Punk/Pharell song, "Get Lucky" and everything by Imagine Dragons.

Watching: Eagerly anticipating the return of my favorite Aussie show, "Dance Academy." Seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix, btw!

Reading: A friend of mine wrote a YA novel that he's hoping to publish. It's about a group of middle schoolers who find a secret portal to another world. Sounds like fun.

  11. I can't listen to or read the news. It makes me so anxious. I was reading something the other day that said our world is not nearly as dangerous as we perceive it, and that being so plugged in to every terrible thing that happens just sort of warps our view of our surroundings. After that I just stopped checking in. It sounds bad, but I'd rather be a little ignorant and feel good about the world than know about every shooting, bombing, etc. and not be able to sleep at night!

I have a Currently post up today, actually, too!

  12. Music suggestion: Dream Tigers. They're a really small band that just recorded their first full-length album (I believe). I saw them a few days ago when they opened for a couple of local bands (Make Do and Mend -- another sweet band). They blew me away!

Your mentioning sea salt and chocolate reminded me of the Salted Caramel Gelato that I bought last week by Haagen Dazs. It was so delicious! It was caramel gelato with a column of salted caramel down the middle. Definitely worth the $4!

  13. You will LOVE The Book Thief! I highly recommend it.

  14. Hi Danielle! I definitely agree about the struggle with watching the news. We mostly just watch our local news for the weather. Thankfully, they are pretty good about covering the good stuff too, like upcoming events in our area and highlighting the small town sports, which is fun.

You've inspired me to write my first Currently post this week! I hope to make it a regular occurrence. :) Hope you have a great day!

  15. I used to watch the news more regularly or keep current online, but now that I'm pregnant, I try to avoid it... it just makes me more stressed and I already worry enough about my son's future, let alone what this new little one will face. So... it's been a lot of TV shows instead - it sounds like the new 90210 could be the really cheesy show I'm looking for considering I never missed an episode of the original. :p Ha ha.

  16. I've been waiting (im)patiently for the rest of the Beautiful Creatures series to be released onto my library's digital loan and it just is not happening. Come on, BPL! I just read this other trilogy (the Gemma Doyle trilogy) that I sort of loved but sometimes, when the heroine is just oblivious it's like omg, really? Still loved it though.

  17. on 90210...loved it til the end...but let me know when Dixon starts to bug you! That kid...I swear!

  18. Have you heard of a band called "Minus the Bear"? They're really awesome, and have upbeat music great for summer listening. Their "Planet of Ice" album was awesome, and their two newest albums "Omni" and "Infinity Overhead" are good as well! I hope you enjoy :)

  19. Music, music, music. It's so easy to get in a rut, happens to me all the time.

Some of my all-time favorites include Interpol, Bass Drum of Death, the Beach Boys, She Wants Revenge, Tame Impala, Islands, anything Jack White is involved in Queens of the Stone Age, Misfits, Black Lips, Metz, Toy, FIDLAR, The Thermals, A$AP Rocky, Deerhunter, Sleigh Bells and Wolfmother.

Some new favorites on my recent summer playlist include Robin Thicke (check out the song "Make U Love Me"), the Allah-Las and Lorde.

Also, The Drums have some PERFECT songs for summertime!

    Enjoy :)

  20. Ugh, the news! I think for me, it's just that I'm way more tuned in to the news as I've gotten older (as well as politics). I litterally just read a horribly disgusting article about a mom &two daughters who've been charged with murder &neglect for the son/brother. This guy had down syndrome and they neglected him so bad that he had a few teeth left barely hanging on in his mouth and his entire body was covered in sores from scabies, some of them so bad you could see bone, BONE. The poor guy weighed only 69 pounds at his death. These women told authorities they didn't want to put him in a care facility because they were worried about not recieving his government assistance and even asked if they would still recieve his social security after his death. I'm so disturbed and disgusted that they could treat another human being like that, especially a family member. There's a special place in hell reserved just for them.

On a more posetive note, here are a few bands that I've been into lately: Barcelona is always a good one, but I've been listening to a lot of Pierce the Viel, Sleeping with Sirens and Upon A Burning Body. Not sure if you'd like the last one. I think they're amazing, but you'd have to be into metal. Not crappy metal, but the new style of metal out today. The other two are more melodic, but still really good. Oh and the most recent album from A Day to Remember is great, slightly harder than their other stuff.

  25. I've been following the Doce Fire a bit - Rob is on the Silver Fire in Southern New Mexico (~33,000 acres now) at 5% containment. Scary stuff but hopefully they'll get them contained soon (for the sake of the land/houses and my selfish sake because I want my husband back! haha).

  29. I definitely had a 90210 phase as well! It gets a bit rusty in the 4th season or so, but until then ENJOY.

I just created my first Currently post: http://6000milestohome.blogspot.com/. Thanks so much for sharing the idea and encouraging people to try it out themselves.

  30. I have to agree. This season of the bachelorette is terrible! Well, it's all terrible, but in an even worse sort of way! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's my own show a week to just zone out to and I can't even seem to enjoy it! Let's hope next season is better...

  31. I love 90210! I'm so bummed out that every show I love quits!

  32. I totally agree - The Bachelorette is lame this season. The guys are pretty terrible and the dates aren't as interesting as they should be. But I'm still blogging my weekly recaps. :)

  33. Great post!
I think the internet has played such a major role in getting information out far and wide and that is why it seems like things are so much worse. We hear about EVERYTHING and it can almost be frightening at times!
As for music, I don't know what you're into but the new Camera Obscura album came out and its really really great.

  37. I was reading the other day about how we are not even in our most violent times, that it just seems that way because correspondance is basically in real time. Got me thinking!

  38. My absolute favorite band is "The Civil Wars"- they have a new album coming out in August, but their albums "Poison & Wine" and "Barton Hollow" are AMAZING, and I literally haven't been able to stop listening to them since the moment I heard them.

  39. I'm hoping to start Beautiful Creatures soon, though it's completely outside of what I normally read. I'm on a huge YA kick right now, though, so might as well!

Feel the same way about violence in the world--I'm really hoping we're just more aware of it at this point as a result of instant news and communication.

  43. I think we're generally much more plugged in to what's going on and the negative things make more of an impression on us and are way more hyped up by the news. In the old days it'd probably take months to find out if something bad happened on the other side of the world if it even reached your ears at all and you'd probably have much less horrifying detail. I don't watch the news because it just exhausts me and makes me hate life and most of the things are way beyond my control anyway.

Music. I don't know what you generally listen to, but I love Sum 41 (their older stuff), Rise Against, The Gaslight Anthem, Billy Talent and the Goo Goo Dolls :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with the news comments. It seems like every week there is some new horror via Mother Nature or humanity itself. I think it's partially the wide access to news we have - people expect global news, but don't anticipate the wide range of what that means.

As for music - do you ever listen to Lavender Diamond or Wild Child? Yellow Ostrich is really good as well!
