Halloween 2013

Halloween 2013. I will forever remember this as the year of Charlie's first Halloween, the year Hank and I attempted to be paleontologists but kind of resembled Boy Scout leaders, when Henry kept saying "NO! I'm a scary DINOSAUR!" whenever someone noted what a cute dragon he was, and as the year he also threw a huge heap of dead leaves on top of Charlie while trick-or-treating. Fun for all! Really though, it was a great night but Hank and I kept joking, "so when do we get to have some fun?" That's the way it goes though, when you have 90 minutes of light before it gets dark and you're trying to rush around an almost-three-year old in a dinosaur costume alongside a baby past his bedtime, right?

As always Halloween in our town is insane and wonderful and really over the top. This year the leaves were a little weird though- many had already turned and fallen off, but some were still totally green so it wasn't quite as beautiful as years past (see them here and here), but nevertheless I was still filled with wonder seeing our everyday sights turned spooky for one evening.

We started trick-or-treating around 4pm and were done by 5:30, and Henry managed to get a ton of candy. We went with Veronica and her family, and our friend Jana and her family. Henry loved being able to be with his friends and kept saying "this is SO FUN!" with the biggest smile on his face the whole time. This was the first year he really got it, and it made my whole holiday to see what a great time he was having. Charlie of course slept through almost all of it. While we were out, my mind kept jumping to next year, and thinking about how crazy it will be that Charlie will be over a year old and Henry will be pushing four. Time sure flies.

I hope you had a happy, happy Halloween too. And if you don't celebrate it, I hope your October 31st was just as wonderful.

  1. This is how I imagined Halloween in my suburban neighborhood, but then I got three trick or treaters and felt slightly disappointed. Adorable photos, and nice grab on the Lays potato chips.

  6. WOW! So cute!! I wish more than anything we had Halloween in Australia when I was a kid, and even now. I bought candy this year (again) just in case, but not one trick or treater... Your neighbourhood looks awesome for Halloween, one year I'll come to America and celebrate :) (Just need to find some kids first)

    1. You should arrange a trip one year to come to America for Halloween. One of my life goals is to spend it in Salem, MA one year! :)

  7. You guys look so cute! We only had one family go trick-or-treating on our block, that I know of. They rang the doorbell just as I was getting out of the shower. I didn't have candy for them, but I would have liked to have seen their costumes! I think the block behind ours has a similar set up to the one in your neighborhood, which seems like fun. My October 31st was the first time I've ever been teaching in a school that really loves/celebrates Halloween, which is tricky since I don't. The best part was having my kids in costumes in the afternoon, the worst was consoling a few of them during our community meeting because someone showed the Thriller video...twice.

    1. Oh my god the Thriller video! Henry loves the song and always wants to do the dance, so I thought I would show him the video. BIG MISTAKE. We can just listen from now on. ;)

  8. Love the photos. I loved trick or treating when I was younger and I can't wait to do it all over again with my own kids in the future. I love how big a thing it is in your town, so much effort and adorable costumes. Charlie and Henry look amazing!

  9. every year when you post halloween pictures i am in awe of how early you guys go trick or treating! :) and there are so many people in your pictures too! it's like a scene from a movie to me.

this year our neighborhood went earlier than normal (around 5 pm) because we had tornado warnings for later in the evening. but generally people around here don't start walking around until after 6 or 6:30.

    1. So many of my friends have said that! So it usually starts around 4, and that's when all the little kids go, then around 6 when it's dark the big kids come out. When I was little we def. went way later too!

  10. Your town is so adorable! Your boys are lucky to live in such a festive place. Around here, the Halloween spirit seems to be lost. We had ONE trick-or-treater. It's sad. I used to love Halloween!

  12. Wow - Your neighbourhood really does go all out! I wish mine did; I got about 20 less kids than last year, it's sad. Your boys were the cutest little dinos!

  13. Oh my god I've never seen so many people trick or treating! Around here I guess people don't go all out. I had only maybe 5 people knock on my door and I live in a nice suburban neighborhood. Jealous!

    1. Thanks Rosie! It's so funny because in the little bubble I live in I always seem to think Halloween is everywhere. But then I got to talking to a girl at the gym about how she once was in the UK for Halloween and wasn't happening at all! So interesting.

Thank you for stopping by! :)

  19. Wow, that looked so much fun. I can hardly wait until we buy a house, so I can decorate it roof to grass! =D Apartments are no fun on Halloween... But thank goodness it was a rather warm day, so the streets were full of kids having fun!
