Reading: I'm just finishing up The Spectacular Now and I'm so happy I saw the movie before I read the book. I actually enjoyed the book at the beginning, but the two versions of the main character- the novel Sutter and the film Sutter- were very different, and I really couldn't get behind the book's take on him (even though I guess that's actually the real Sutter). The movie made him so much more likable, and in turn I found myself rooting for him. They did the same thing with Amy, and I while reading it I was engaged because of the movie. It was a little strange for me because I almost always like a book much better than its film version, but this time around I would watch the movie anytime but never pick the novel up again. Next on my list: one and two.

Eating: This past week was a slow week in the world of my cookbook project, but I have four recipes to make this week and I'm excited to try them out. I've also been on a major Quest Bar kick. Have you tried them yet? Hank and I love them, and I usually eat one a day as a treat. For what it is they're super healthy, and have a whopping 20 grams of protein, a lot of fiber, and very low sugars (usually 1-2 grams depending on the type). My favorite flavors are the chocolate chip cookie dough (put it in the microwave for 8 seconds and it tastes like you're eating the real deal!), apple pie, and cookies and cream.

Thinking about: Henry was supposed to start preschool this week but because of President's Day he'll start next Monday. So I now have six more days until my baby is officially a preschooler. Crazy. Also, our pediatrician is closing her practice in a couple of months and I'm heartbroken. It's so sad when you really love a doctor (or teacher or anyone who becomes a part of your life) and then things change. I hope we can find another one we love just as much.

Listening: I've had Kacey Musgrave's album "Same Trailer Different Park" on repeat for a couple of weeks and I can't get enough. I hadn't ever heard of Kacey before the Grammys but became intrigued when I heard her live. I also can't deny the allure of those light-up boots! ha. She's awesome though, and I really enjoy both her fun, light-hearted songs and pretty voice. Great music.

Watching: Scandal. This show has been recommended to me so many times by so many people but for some reason I just never got into it. The other week Hank was at band practice until late, I had finished up any reading I wanted to do, and the boys were both asleep. I decided to treat myself to something on Netflix, and this was the first thing that popped up. I decided to finally give it a whirl and WOW. Right from the get-go I was hooked. It's really a great show- wonderful writing and that the character of Olivia Pope is amazing. I adore her! Does anyone else watch it? I'm just catching up on Season 3, I'm on episode 4. I haven't been watching too much else besides my favorite shows here and there (Nashville, etc.) and I'm still not watching The Bachelor. To be honest I'm not sure if I'll watch it again. This season was way too dumb and I just can't justify spending two hours of my life on it! From what I've heard the consensus is the same, although I do have some friends who are still loving it. Are you watching it?

Loving: all of you who take the time to read my posts, to leave comments, tweets, messages, emails, etc. I appreciate all of you so much and you make this blog such a fun place to share things that I love. I can't thank you enough for being a part of my daily life.

p.s. I'm over at Maiedae today, sharing a bit about being a Mom. Head on over to check it out!

So, how about you? What are you up to today? Feel free to do your own "currently" post on your blog and link back in the comments for everyone to check out. And thanks again to my dear friend Megan for providing the original inspiration for these posts.

  4. I love when you do Currently posts! Abe and I just watched The Spectacular Now the other week and we liked it for the most part. I was surprised by how much they drank though! Haha Based on your review, I don't think I'll pick up the book. I did just request The Goldfinch from the library, so I'll let you know what I think of it. What a bummer about your pediatrician! Hopefully you will find another one soon that you like just as much. I haven't been watching the Bachelor either. Hopefully next season will be more interesting! I love Scandal, too! I'm finishing up the 2nd season right now. Can't wait to catch up!

  5. I just finished The Spectacular Now also (but have not seen the movie). I loved the whole sentiment of Sutter at the end but I didn't find him very likable!

  7. Hahaha I feel like I wrote your "Listening" paragraph myself. Exactly the same feelings. Loved those boots so I had to check out the CD. Follow Your Arrow, Stupid, and Blowin' Smoke are my favorites!! And Keep It To Yourself! Ah it's all so good. I love how she's like telling a story in each song because I always pay attention to the words and don't space out, which I happen to do with a lot of radio music. Also, I LOVED The Spectacular Now!! I only saw the movie because of my love for Shailene Woodley and I want to read the book too but I'll take what you've said under advisement and not get my hopes up!

  9. I read The Spectacular Now and wasn't too hyped to watch the movie when I finished, but this post made me think that I should give it a shot. I don't know what I was expecting from the book, but I remember feeling disappointed when it was over. Thanks for the heads up!

  10. You know, I watched Scandal and while I like it and will probably continue to watch, I can't get behind the way that Olivia is treated by Fitz! I feel like the whole relationship is beneath a woman of Olivia Pope's character. I think he dominates her and doesn't really let her be an equal. I just don't get it because the show is written by a woman and I think the way she writes the storyline glorifies his dominance a little? Anyway, I would love to see her with someone else! :)

  11. I'm dying for you to finish catching up on Scandal so we can discuss more. Next week new episodes start back up! Also, I adore Kasey Musgraves and wish we lived closer to one another so we could go to country concerts together!

    Love you, lady.

  12. My husband and I keep saying we are going to get in to Scandal but we still haven't watched it. However, it is in our Netflix queue so I guess we will have to watch it at some point!

  13. I still miss our first pediatrician from when we lived in Albany, NY. He was such a good doctor. We've had a few since, but no one really compares. You'll find another that will work just fine for your kids, but I bet you will still think of this doctor fondly. At least you know how good doctors can be so you won't settle for subpar ones!

We might have to watch Scandal. We are out of things on Netflix & Hulu to marathon watch.

  14. Scandal and Parenthood were on Thursdays TOGETHER for the recent seasons. I opted to DVR both and see how I felt the following day as to which I'd watch first. ; ) having TV is crazy. We hadn't had it for almost four years, so netflix was all I had. Now I stayed caught up and it kind of sucks having to wait til next week haha, rather than blazing though them like netflix.

We're watching the second season of 'house of cards' on there now we only have three episodes left and then will likely have to wait another year for the next season! 'Orange is the New Black' starts back up in June though I believe.

  16. Dear Dani, I love your Currently posts. There is always something new for me to check out and to discover. I've never heard of Kacey Musgraves bevore, but I listened to some songs right after reading your post this morning and I'm still listening :) (it's now noon in Germany)
So thank you for inspiring me once again and have a wonderful day today!

  19. Scandal is such a great show! I am totally one of those people that when I find a good show on Netflix of Hulu (I don't have cable) I tend to watch all the seasons in a row. I just can't get enough!

  20. The Bachelor has only gotten worse since you stopped watching.

So many of the things he does make me feel physically uncomfortable. He tells the women not to think, dismisses everything they say that isn't about him, and leans over them while they're talking. There haven't been more than a few sentences between him and any of the women because he pounces on them with his awkward face-grabbing kisses. I have no idea how these next couple episodes are going to unfold.

I say this every season, but this really might be my last as a Bachelor viewer.

  21. I don't know what I would do if our pediatrician closed his practice. We have been with him for the past almost-two years (since my youngest was born in April 2010) and I absolutely love him, his office, his staff, everything. I love him so much that I drive over an hour each way to take my kids to him. I totally empathize with you on this one :(

  22. 1) scandal. I'm still on the first season .. episode 4 I want to say. I've been watching it very slowly, but I absolutely love it!!!! I'm a HUGE Grey's Anatomy fan so I love how this is so similar but more on mystery & politics. Shonda Rimes is great. :)
    2) Bachelor is so stupid. I just started watching last season with Desiree as the Bachelorette and I loved it but I hate Juan Pablo. First of all, I can't get over his homophobic remarks and second, he seems like such an egotistical jerk. Ew. I try to cut out any & all things that make me feel negative and the Bachelor is one of those things, so I quit it. :)

    Have a great day!

  23. 1) Scandal. I'm obsessed! I'm only on Season 1 Ep 4 I want to say? I'm watching it slowly but I absolutely love it. I'm a HUGE Grey's Anatomy fan and because Scandal & Grey's are by the same creator, I automatically love the style of Scandal. :) I can't wait to continue watching.

    2) Ew, Bachelor. I watched it last season with Desiree as the Bachelorette and I was SUPER into it however with Juan Pablo, I can't stand it. I try my best to cut out any & all things that make me feel negative, and the Bachelor makes me feel so angry so I quit that show. I can't get past his homophobic remarks & how egotistical he seems with the girls. Yeah, dropped that one pretty quick.. ugh!

    Have a great day!
    Jessica.

  24. I love these posts; thanks for the inspiration! I am excited to try Quest Bars and add some protein to my marathon training diet; the cookie dough sounds SO GOOD! http://stefanieshouldbearealityshow.blogspot.com/2014/02/currently-021914.html

  25. I also watched The Spectacular Now movie first and that's what led me to the book. I felt similarly about the book/film dynamic. I'm usually on board with the book version of things, but this time was different. The book almost felt watered down and Miles Teller was so likeable as Sutter in the film. Also, I felt book Amy was so annoyingly underconfident. I just couldn't hang.

Also, Scandal has been recommended to me a lot. I feel like soon I'll pull the trigger on that one!

  26. I love Scandal! I got into it last Easter when my sister was home catching up. I still need to get caught up with previous seasons but I'm glad it's the type of show where I was able to jump right in and now feel lost! It takes me FOREVER to catch up on shows!

And I'm also guilty of having Kacey Musgrave's on repeat. I love her Follow Your Arrow song! I'm not big on country, so the rest of her album is still something I'm warming up to but I'm hooked on the one song!

  27. I read The Spectacular Now after seeing a preview for the movie. I like reading the book first. :) I still haven't seen the movie, but I have a feeling I'll like it more because I wanted that "hollywood" ending in the book.
Want to watch Scandal, but I don't think my husband will be into it. So many friends and people online have recommended it, so I'm dying to start it.

  35. I like how you enjoy looking at both the book and movie for The Spectacular Now. It seems to me like a lot of people are really strict about reading the book first. But I think that sometimes watching the movie first can be helpful for visualizing the characters and grasping a good part of the plot before jumping into the book. Nice short and sweet post :)

  36. These are still my favorite posts of yours. If you haven't seen it yet; you should watch the movie "About Time". It was so so good. I watched it alone at first and then this weekend watched again with Cole and he was pretty moved. It's just such a perspective changer wrapped in a fun quirky romantic love story.

Anyway, here's my newest Currently post Hope you can read it!
